It's the full collection, Charlie Brown! AKA continuing the Warner Peanuts 1960s, 1970s "decade" collections (a WIP)

 (Edited)

Apparently, Warner gave up on this idea, so we’ll probably never see a 1980s, 1990s or 2000s collection, which is a shame. To collect EVERYTHING Charlie Brown/ Snoopy/ Peanuts on DVD in the USA in as-aired order, (not counting documentaries/ stage musicals, etc) you need these (from Warner Bros unless noted otherwise):

Peanuts 1960s Collection
Peanuts 1970s Collection Vol. 1
Peanuts 1970s Collection Vol. 2

Peanuts: Emmy Honored Collection (contains 9 episodes not in the decade releases and 2 duplicates, see below)
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown
The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show: The Complete Series (MOD on DVD-r)
This is America, Charlie Brown (WB version, as Paramount version is missing a scene)
Peanuts Double Feature (first two movies on two DVDs, Paramount)
Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown (Paramount)
Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don’t Come Back!!) (Paramount)
Peanuts Motion Comics (MOD on DVD-r)
The Peanuts Movie

All of the other releases are a hodge-podge of one or two episodes out-of-airing order, most of which are fully or partially duplicated in the above.

My goal is to collect all of the other episodes and movies, including everything not yet on DVD, and create my own aired-order collections, which would continue the decade sets. To break these down, they would contain these animated specials, in this order: (taken from NTSC R1 DVDs if available. If not released on DVD, source is listed):

Peanuts 1970s Movie Collection:

Disc 1 (Retail DVD):

  • A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969)

Disc 2 (Retail DVD):

  • Snoopy, Come Home (1972)

Peanuts 1980’s collection vol 1:

Disc 1:

  • She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown (1980)
  • Life Is a Circus, Charlie Brown (1980)
  • It’s Magic, Charlie Brown (1981)
  • Someday You’ll Find Her, Charlie Brown (1981)

Disc 2:

  • A Charlie Brown Celebration (1982) (NTSC-converted from Australian DVD)
  • Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown? (1983)
  • It’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown (1983) (NTSC-converted from Australian DVD)

Peanuts 1980’s Movie Collection:

Disc 1 (Retail DVD):

  • Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown (1977)

Disc 2 (Retail DVD):

  • Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don’t Come Back!!) (1980)
  • Travels with Charlie: The Making of Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown documentary

Peanuts 1980’s collection vol 2:

Disc 1:

  • What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown? (1983)
  • It’s Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown (1984)
  • Snoopy’s Getting Married, Charlie Brown (1985)

Disc 2 (Retail DVD):

  • You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1985)

Disc 3:

  • Snoopy!!! The Musical (1988) (NTSC-converted from Australian DVD)
  • It’s the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown (1988) (VHS-rip)

Peanuts 1990’s collection:

Disc 1:

  • Why, Charlie Brown, Why? (1990)
  • Snoopy’s Reunion (1991)
  • It’s Spring Training, Charlie Brown (1992)

Disc 2:

  • It’s Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown (1992)
  • You’re in the Super Bowl, Charlie Brown (1994) (VHS-rip)
  • It Was My Best Birthday Ever, Charlie Brown (1997) (VCD-converted)

Peanuts 2000’s collection:

Disc 1:

  • It’s the Pied Piper, Charlie Brown (2000)
  • A Charlie Brown Valentine (2002)
  • Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tales (2002)

Disc 2:

  • Lucy Must Be Traded, Charlie Brown (2003)
  • I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown (2003)
  • He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown (2006)

Disc 3 (Retail DVD):

  • Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown (2011)
  • Various bonus features

These would all have custom menus and cover art created by me to match the retail 1960s and 1970s collections. Once complete and with some custom covers, your collection would look like this:

Peanuts 1960s Collection (retail)
Peanuts 1970s Movie Collection (retail)
Peanuts 1970s Collection Vol. 1 (retail)
Peanuts 1970s Collection Vol. 2 (retail)
Peanuts 1980s Collection Vol. 1
Peanuts 1980s Movie Collection (retail)
Peanuts 1980s Collection Vol. 2
Peanuts 1980s: The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show (retail)
Peanuts 1980s: This is America, Charlie Brown (retail)
Peanuts 1990s Collection (2 discs)
Peanuts 2000s Collection (3 discs)
Peanuts Motion Comics
The Peanuts Movie

The collections would also contain all of the bonus features from the single disc releases (which were not carried over to the decade sets):

The Making of A Charlie Brown Christmas (2001)
A Christmas Miracle: The Making of A Charlie Brown Christmas (2008)
We Need a Blockbuster, Charlie Brown
Snoopy’s Home Ice: The Story of the Redwood Empire Ice Arena
The Polls Don’t Lie: The Making of You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown
Popcorn and Jellybeans: Making a Thanksgiving Classic
In Full Bloom: Peanuts at Easter
Unlucky in Love: An Unrequited Love Story
Dust Yourself Off and Pick Yourself Up, Charlie Brown
Together Again: A Peanuts Voice-cast Reunion
An Enduring Classic: Peanuts Creator Charles Shultz
Sibling Rivalry: Growing Up Van Pelt

plus the bonus features on the unchanged retail DVDs

In addition to the above, in order to legally own these collections, you would need to own these WB NTSC R1 DVDs (listed with what was used from each in parenthesis):

A Charlie Brown Valentine (A Charlie Brown Valentine)
Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tales (Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tales)
Snoopy’s Reunion Deluxe Edition (Snoopy’s Reunion, Together Again documentary)
I Want A Dog For Christmas, Charlie Brown Deluxe Edition (Happy New Year; I Want A Dog For Christmas, Sibling Rivalry documentary)
Happiness is Peanuts: Go Snoopy Go! (It’s Spring Training)
A Charlie Brown Christmas Deluxe Edition (It’s Christmastime Again; A Christmas Miracle documentary)
Happiness is Peanuts: Team Snoopy (Lucy Must Be Traded)
He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown (He’s a Bully)

For documentaries only, these were used:

He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown Deluxe Edition (Snoopy’s Home Ice: The Story of the Redwood Empire Ice Arena)
It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown Deluxe Edition (We Need a Blockbuster, Charlie Brown)
You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown Deluxe Edition (The Polls Don’t Lie: The Making of You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown)
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Deluxe Edition (Popcorn and Jellybeans: Making a Thanksgiving Classic)
Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown Deluxe Edition (Unlucky in Love: An Unrequited Love Story)
It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown (In Full Bloom: Peanuts at Easter)
You’re a Good Sport, Charlie Brown (Dust Yourself Off and Pick Yourself Up, Charlie Brown)

Peanuts: Emmy Honored Collection is a two disc set which contains the following: She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown; Life Is a Circus, Charlie Brown; It’s Magic, Charlie Brown; Someday You’ll Find Her, Charlie Brown; Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?; What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown?; It’s Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown; Snoopy’s Getting Married, Charlie Brown; Why, Charlie Brown, Why? as well as two specials from the 1970s Vol 2 set: You’re a Good Sport, Charlie Brown and You’re the Greatest, Charlie Brown.

Everything else is from out-of-region and out-of-print DVDs, VHSs and one Video CD. I used the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show six disc set from Australia to obtain the specials A Charlie Brown Celebration, It’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown, and Snoopy!!! The Musical as they are bonus features on the set, which have not been released on NTSC DVD. It’s The Pied Piper, Charlie Brown is an OOP Paramount DVD. I chopped off the Paramount open/ ending logos to match everything else, and it also contains the documentary An Enduring Classic. The OOPs Paramount version of I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown contains The Making of A Charlie Brown Christmas from 2001.

This project will include only the English audio and no subtitles. Since not much is changed from the retail DVDs, except the ordering of the specials, I will do this in a manner how I did “Backstroke of the West”, meaning I supply the menus and the rare material, as well as instructions for ripping the rest yourself.

Kinda. Sorry I didn’t see your reply until now. So all 4 movies are available now, as well as two more specials on the Emmy Nominated collection. I haven’t done anything on this in a while, but when I get on my PC, I can tell you what I have so far.

I’m also in the process of creating my own complete “Peanuts” Collection, but I’m doing my set differently in a few ways: since I use Adobe Premiere Elements 12 for my DVDs, I was able to put more of the post-1970s specials onto fewer discs (4-6 each) and instead of several cases of 1-3 discs each (no offense to the way the author is doing it, I think that’s a great idea too), my set is 2 cases with 10-12 discs each: one with the 1960s-70s stuff (i.e. all 3 decades sets and all 4 classic movies) and one with the 1980s-2000s stuff (i.e. all of the 1980s-2000s specials on custom DVDs and the retail sets of both TV shows, the MOTION COMICS COLLECTION, HAPPINESS IS A WARM BLANKET and the 2015 movie).

For the 1960s-70s case, I’ve arranged the discs in this order:
1960s Disc 1
1960s Disc 2
A Boy Named Charlie Brown
Snoopy Come Home
1970s 1/2 Disc 1
1970s 1/2 Disc 2
1970s 2/2 Disc 1
Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown
1970s 2/2 Disc 2
Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown

For the 1980s-2000s case, these are the discs I created. I used less discs because my version of the complete set does not include any of the special features from the individual releases. The capitalized titles are the retail sets:
1980s 1/3
She’s a Good Skate Charlie Brown
Life’s a Circus, Charlie Brown
It’s Magic, Charlie Brown
Someday You’ll Find Her, Charlie Brown
A Charlie Brown Celebration*

1980s 2/3
Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?
It’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown*
What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown?
It’s Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown
Snoopy’s Getting Married, Charlie Brown

THE CHARLIE BROWN AND SNOOPY SHOW (2 DISCS)

1980s 3/3
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!
Snoopy!!! The Musical*
It’s the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown*

THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN (2 DISCS)

1990s
Why, Charlie Brown, Why?
Snoopy’s Reunion
It’s Spring Training, Charlie Brown
It’s Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown
You’re in the Superbowl, Charlie Brown*
It Was My Best Birthday Ever, Charlie Brown*

2000s
It’s the Pied Piper, Charlie Brown*
A Charlie Brown Valentine
Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tales
Lucy Must Be Traded, Charlie Brown
I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown
He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown

PEANUTS MOTION COMICS COLLECTION

HAPPINESS IS A WARM BLANKET, CHARLIE BROWN

THE PEANUTS MOVIE

*Because some of the post-1970s specials were released on VHS and/or DVD sets that are now out of print, I’ve included a URL to a folder of DVD rips of those specials on MEGA, converted to mp4: https://mega.nz/#F!YoVHRTgJ and the key is !ypoxpNP1xukZTYmzPp54RA

Is “A Charlie Brown Celebration” the same as “It’s Your 20th Television Anniversary, Charlie Brown”?

The dropbox folder seems empty. (But then maybe I’m doing something wrong.)

I own all of the TV specials you’ve listed on DVD except for the following below:

A Charlie Brown Celebration VHS
It’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown VHS
Snoopy: The Musical VHS
It’s the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown VHS
You’re in the Super Bowl, Charlie Brown VHS
It Was My Best Birthday Ever, Charlie Brown VHS
It’s the Pied Piper, Charlie Brown DVD

Any help would be appreciated. I almost have a complete collection… Thanks!

Yeah, my Dropbox ran out of room, so I’ll buy more space tonight and re-post the unreleased specials.

A Charlie Brown Celebration
It’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown
and
Snoopy: The Musical
are available on DVD, only in Australia, as bonus features on the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show collection.

I am not region free. And they would have PAL issues? Never dealt with region 4 discs.

I can get you these. In the process of converting Snoopy the Musical from PAL to NTSC. Then I’ll do Adventure and Celebration. When they’re done, I can get them to you. I have a VHS rip of Red Truck, a Video CD rip of Birthday, both in DVD format and Pied Piper on DVD. I can have those up for you this weekend, and the PAL to NTSC conversions as soon as they are done. Super Bowl is the only one that I have only on VHS, but my DVD recorder is broken right now.

Oh and yeah the Australian discs are region 4 PAL. They don’t play on my US DVD or Blu Ray players. But they play on my PC just fine. I did a sample of PAL to NTSC conversion and it looked perfect to me. I bought the Australian Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show instead of the US for two reasons: the US release is a DVD-R release anyway, so converting the episodes from PAL to NTSC and burning my own DVD-R discs wouldn’t be much different, and two: the fact that they are the only way to get Celebration, Adventure and Snoopy Musical on DVD! They are on the CB&S show set as bonus features, as well as ‘Good Man’.

There’s a VHS of It Was My Best Birthday Ever, Charlie Brown sitting in a clamshell case for sale at a local used movie/book store in my area. They also have Pied Piper VHS in a clamshell case for sale. (At least they were there when I visited this past week.) I didn’t have my list of what I still needed on my phone, so I didn’t buy them at the time…

I have a Mitsubishi S-VHS VCR and the means to transfer the Birthday VHS to a DVD-R on a stand-alone DVD recorder/player. Or I could import it via firewire to a PC’s hard drive. Whether I have the technical skill to do the capture with as much quality as possible is another matter.

UPDATE: Got 'em both just now. 95 cents for Pied Piper and $3.95 for Best Birthday Ever.

I assume this would potentially be of better quality than a Video CD version of Birthday you mentioned?

By the way, for The Peanuts Movie (2015), there is a bonus disc found only as a limited edition Target exclusive.
Here’s some information: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Peanuts-Movie-Blu-ray/152385/

And also, for people who have Blu-ray burners and/or players.
Why not make custom Blu-rays of the Peanuts specials/movies released on Blu-ray?
You can still have the DVD versions.

I think A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown and The Peanuts Movie were all released on Blu-ray.

There are also some specials released on iTunes in HD and some HDTV airings in torrent sites, I’m not sure about the quality of them, though.

We’re still waiting for the USA Blu-ray release of A Boy Named Charlie Brown and Snoopy, Come Home since the Australian Blu-rays had wrong aspect ratio and hopefully, US versions are fixed.

I also have a suggestion to add LPCM Laserdisc audio for Peanuts specials released on Laserdisc if disc space and bitrate limits will allow it.

For A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, keep the 5.1 surround tracks while also adding the Laserdisc audio.

And for The Peanuts Movie (2015), you can also add the 3D version as well.
Probably convert it to red-blue 3D for DVD as well.

I am a newcomer to the Peanuts fandom but my love for Peanuts is strong.

I really want to collect all the specials.

Unfortunately, Laserdisc is too impractical though it is superior to DVD in most cases and VHS is of low quality and is impractical.
I want to see the fruits of your labor.

We can also attach other users to your project. Hopefully making custom Blu-rays possible.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

You’re so right.

Sounds good, but I don’t have a way to make HD or Blu Ray anything.

I don’t know, I just figured since it was digital already, it would be better than VHS. Here’s a 2 min sample so maybe you can tell me how it compares when you get your VHS.

I didn’t want to spend another $100 on Dropbox, so I used MEGA to upload the OOP specials. I will provide a link shortly.

So the DVDs “He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown” and “Peanuts: The Emmy Honored Collection” (AKA almost the 1980s Collection) have HD to SD remasters of most/all of the specials on them. This is all fine and dandy, but they also only have Dolby 5.1 audio tracks. I’m having trouble trying to sync up the mono tracks from the older DVDS to the better video, for consistency.

For some reason, the newer versions are all a few seconds longer. I tried lengthening the mono audio to the 5.1’s length, but it didn’t quite work. Any idea why they would be longer in HD? Is this normal for all HD to SD comparisons?

Didn’t realize that. I just assumed for He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown, they used the previous (remastered) transfers. Can you please do an image comparison for the specials on that discs with the other Warner releases that have them?

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to do it yet, as I had to get ready for a ltitle business trip/ vacation.

What I did so far is I made a list of all the Peanuts Warner Bros DVDs by release order, not counting Motion Comics, the TV show or This is America. The ones that came out in 2015 or later (which are just those two, He’s a Bully and Emmy Honored) are new HD based transfers. I’m not sure if it’s every episode, but I do know that none of the episodes on these two releases have the mono or stereo soundtracks, only 5.1, even the TV episode on “Bully”.

I will post my findings Thursday when I’m back in town.

EPISODE COMPARISONS

The episodes on the DVDs Peanuts: The Emmy Honored Collection and He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown have newly remastered HD to SD transfers, with 5.1 Surround Sound replacing the mono or stereo soundtracks. Here are screenshots taken with VLC, all on the same computer, comparing these with the old releases of the same episodes, along with the episode length of each release.
