I was amazed to see just how many practical effects that was in it. I’m also glad to see that they borrowed the method used by Nolan in Interstellar to project images outside the spaceship windows rather than to just film everything with a green-screen background.
Yep, this makes me SO excited for the film. JJ Abrams bragged about his use of practical effects in episode 7 but he didn’t nearly go this far! I’m hoping to see some models an practical ships rather than CGI ones now.
Agreed, but let’s not forget that TFA did have plenty of practical stuff in it, but a lot of it got overshadowed by all the CGI. This could happen to RO as well.
But just doing something as simple as projected backdrops instead of green-screen does at least show that Gareth Edwards might be willing to put the practical stuff more center-frame than Abrams did.
I think these two new furry creatures might help the film a fair bit in achieving an over-all feeling of realism. Although Maz was an impressive CG character, she did seem oddly out of place in the very practical effects filled cantina/castle set to me. Luckily TFA had Chewie.
I’m not too sure about miniatures though, but if Edwards borrowed the projected background idea from Interstellar, then maybe he borrowed the use of miniatures as well? I’m kinda skeptical towards this, but it could help explain that amazing-looking Star Destroyer from the trailer.
