Idea and Info Wanted: a Star Wars - Collector's Edition?

So, my girlfriend’s birthday is coming in October and I wanted to make her something not only nice, but something that will appeal to her Sci-Fi geek side as well (she’s in love with Star Wars as much as I am). So I was thinking that maybe I would try to replicate the 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of Blade Runner and create a special Collector’s Edition for Star Wars. I was thinking it would go something like this:

Disc One: The Complete Saga Cut (2011)
Disc Two: Original Theatrical Cut (1977), Re-Release Theatrical Cut (1981)
Disc Three: Special Edition VHS Cut (1997), Special Edition DVD Cut (2004)
Disc Four: Special Features

I was thinking for the sources I would use a BD Rip of SW from my Complete Saga box set for the obviously titled Complete Saga cut, Despecialized Edition v2.7 for the Original Theatrical Cut and modify DespecEd 2.7 with the Episode IV crawl for the Re-Release Theatrical Cut, the Reivax DTV Capture for the SE VHS Cut, and the Star.Wars.Episode.IV.A.New.Hope.1977.720p.HDTV.x264-DON for the SE DVD Cut.

I might need alternate sources for each one just in case I can’t find those sources, and I also don’t know what should I include for special features. If anyone could help me with that, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, please let me know if this is something that I should do. I think it’s a worthwhile project and would love to undertake it, but I don’t wanna step on anyone’s toes if someone else is already doing something like this.

Thank you all for your input!

You can use Team Blu or Harmy’s 97 preservation instead of the TV capture if you want HD quality over authenticity. And since you’re using Despecialized, I imagine you do.

Also, Towne32 was kind enough to PM me a version of 2.7 with the ANH crawl if you want to save some work. I’m not sure if he’s released it anywhere else or not. But if not, I’m sure one of us could help you out.

As for Special Features, I know several users here have made Special Features discs loaded with documentaries and such for use as bonus discs in custom Blu-ray sets like this. Look around the forums.

Yes, I would definitely like it to be HD across the board as much as possible since I plan on making this a BD set.

I would definitely be grateful to get my hands on that. I was gonna try and lift the crawl from the BD Rip I was gonna make, but this would definitely save me some time.

I’ll definitely go hunting for Special Features discs soon. That’s what’s been racking my brain the most, besides how I’m going to make the menus and all that other stuff.

I hate double posting, but I am currently downloading both SW DeEd 2.7 and ReEd, and I’m ripping the ANH BD right now, and I’m having a hard time tracking down a decent 2004 DVD rip. I was hoping someone could point me to one before I break down and try to find either the 2004 or 2006 DVDs on Amazon or ebay.

You have a PM, however you should know that not owning the source material is frowned upon.

I own the Complete Saga boxset, which I mentioned earlier. Thank you for the PM.

This includes the 2004 DVD, since you’re wanting a rip of that as well.

I am currently looking into purchasing either the 2004 or 2006 DVD with this in mind now. Thank you for the info.

Why would you send a PM helping out someone who is breaking the forum rules?

Look for my HD versions of the 2001-2005 titles on myspleen, assuming, of course, you get access to those DVDs. They’re 1080p.

If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…

I wasn’t aware I was breaking any rules. I just thought you had to have at least one retail copy of your sources. I didn’t know you needed retail copies of ALL of your sources.

All has been explained. Frink sorry for my poor use of ‘however’.

It depends on what it is. With something like Despecialized, Harmy says you should own the Blu Rays, since those are the primary source for those. Since you are using multiple versions, it’s best to own those individually.

The thing is that the 2004 DVDs were never released in HD quality in a consumer format. There’s a reason MySpleen allows those HDTV rips but not direct rips of the Blu-rays. And not to mention, they’re out of print anyway so buying them used will not go to Lucasfilm or anything. In a way it’s not much different than paying for a bootleg of Despecialized. The end result is the same. Just seems kind of pointless to me. And Harmy doesn’t ask that you own the GOUT or the 2004 DVDs and never did, even when the GOUT was used for pretty much everything outside of the Blu-ray. I don’t really see why you need to own the 2004 DVDs to “ethically” download the broadcast. It’s all technically piracy anyway, as much as some on this site like to deny it. And they’re all the same movies that were only copyrighted twice AFAIK, the original release date and then again in 1997. So if you own the latest SE, you own them all as far as I’m concerned. The 2004 HD broadcast and 2011 Blu-ray were even from the same exact transfer, just a few additional changes were made for 2011.

Ah, I got it. Well, I am attempting to procure the 2006 DVDs from eBay now to avoid this snafu from happening again.

Who knew trying to make a present for someone would turn into this…

“If a project is sourced from an HDTV broadcast, and that movie has subsequently been made available for purchase on Blu-ray Disc, you are expected to own the BD before obtaining the fan project.”

So… if he owns the Blu-ray he’s good then. This adult sees the debate as settled, you’re right.

If I argue with you, I’m not an adult by my own admission.

Well played.

Author

Well, if an “adult” is someone who follows “the rules” unquestioningly and refuses to “debate” them or think critically, I have no interest in being an “adult.” YMMV of course.

I’ve never downloaded the Harmy versions, but if I ever were to do so - and the only within-the-rules way of doing so was owning the bd - I’d definitely make sure I acquired it used and not brand new. In my opinion, the more fresh copies of those discs that get sold, the less likely the powers-that-be will see a reason to give us the official OOT release we’ve been going on about for all these years. You shouldn’t have to cast a vote with your wallet in favor of the 2011 versions just to enjoy the original versions ethically.

While I am still hunting for sources, I have taken the time to throw together the BD cover:

Box Art

I intend on housing the discs in a black case similar to TFA’s.
