I find it surprisingly useful. When it started it was kind of fun. I could play scrabbulous with friends in other towns reconnect with former school and work mates but once the novelty had worn off I just used it to arrange my trips down south. When I started to look for work again about three years ago I needed references from former bosses and started using it again. I have lots of real world friends and family scattered across the globe so it’s sort of essential tech now. But it has its dangers. For example if you are surrounded by people of a like mind it can distort your view of public opinion. I got the results if the Scottish and Brexit referenda correct because I go out into the real world and listen to what people have to say but I know lots of people who only use social media to discuss such matters who were very shocked. I’m pretty outspoken on issues that I care about and this has caused ripples on the water. I have seen people with serious mental health problems use social media as a loud hailer to shout at other equally vulnerable people. I have some friends and family who are socially isolated because of illness and it helps them stay connected. So it can be good but it can be not good and it’s clearly not for everyone.
