I’m not sure when it comes to describing a shape, but when it comes to media it isn’t. In computing “disk” refers to magnetic media (hard disk, floppy disk) while “disc” refers to optical media (Laserdisc, Compact Disc, Digital Video Disc). I’ve no idea why that’s the case, but it is.

A quick grammar nazi question - is the “disk” a typo or one of the examples of US English vs. UK English?

Disk is used for magnetic storage devices, like traditional HDD’s, and disc is used for optical storage devices, like CD’s etc. (in the US at least,no clue about other parts of the world). For LaserDisc though, that was just what it was called either way. It was a marketing/branding term specific to the product invented by Pioneer, it’s its own word.

Wow, English can be more confusing than I thought 😃

So the ESB BD50 on the spleen is correct and the “ESB BD25 DOCUMENTARIES FIXED” is correct also?

Yes.

I’ve started work on the ROTJ documentary disk, and have a dilemma. There are a bevy of choices, and I don’t think I can adequately fit them all on a 25GB disk. Here are the current candidates:

Jamie Benning – Returning to Jedi 2:30
Jamie Benning ROTJ Special effects – 5 mins
Jamie Benning: Inside Jabba – 20 mins
Making of a saga – 1:10
Empire of dreams Part III - 30 mins
Classic creatures – 48 mins
When star wars rules the world – 41 mins

I am considering going for a 50GB disk for the ROTJ doco disk to allow all these to be included. The other alternative is to cut some of these, and stick with 25GB.

Thoughts?

(The 50GB option would allow for even more choices too.)

Yes, and I would like to make the suggestion of From Star Wars to Jedi for the disc if you follow through with the 50gb option…

Author

Yes, it’s already on the list (making of a saga).

I think Making of a Saga is another name From Star Wars to Jedi. I’m sure njvc will clarify that. Personally, I’d just cut the 5 min. Special Effects and the 20 min. Inside Jabba entries as those aren’t really full documentaries anyway.

Edit: Well he clarified it before I could even finish writing my post. Lol.

I’d agree with BMadden- People who can only do the 25GB disks shouldn’t miss out on the doco disk to complete their series. You’ve put together such an amazing series of disks, I think that consistency is the most important thing here… but that being said, this is totally your project, and whatever you decide will make us all happy.

I would say, if your time and effort allows for it, to make two options. I haven’t the slightest idea how much time and effort that would take, but I know it would be very considerable so I won’t even presume.

If there were two options though - one for 50gb and one for 25gb, I wouldn’t personally opt for 25gb (as I wouldn’t be using it if the 50gb was offered, and I’m assuming all those listed extras would fit on a DL disc)… But I do think if the 50gb disc is offered, that a 25gb be offered as well. There are many here, I’m supposing, that aren’t able to do DL and have been keeping up with your project and are banking on consistency, and have only been using 25gb discs all along. If it’s a vote for “either, or” as in either 25gb, or 50 gb, I’d choose 25gb just so it didn’t fuck up all those currently able to use it, even though I wouldn’t prefer it. If it could be two different disc size options, with all options on the 50gb and one with “the best chosen extras” on a single layer 25gb, I think that would be absolutely ideal. That way, on the 50gb disc, you could absolutely maximize bitrate even with the kitchen sink included.

I’m also more than a little buzzed and probably rambling.

Well, like I said above, if it everything can fit on a 25gb disc just by removing those 5 min and 20 min featurettes I think that would be the way to go. Between Returning to Jedi, From Star Wars to Jedi, Empire of Dreams and Classic Creatures that’s more than enough ROTJ material and I don’t think losing those 2 small entries would be a big deal. Just my .02 on the subject. 😃

Yeah, I don’t think we need to be inconsistent and have a 50gb jedi disc just for those two features that aren’t very important.

I don’t think the 5 and 20 min doco are the issue, moreso the collection of longer ones. It’s likely one of them won’t make it on a 25. I’ll look into a 25 and 50gb option.

Though I wouldn’t mind a 50gb option, I say keep the following:

Jamie Benning – Returning to Jedi 2:30 - since you have the ANH and ESB ones on those, so keep this.
Empire of dreams Part III - 30 mins - obvisouly, since you have the other parts on the other discs.
Classic creatures – 48 mins - since this is THE ROTJ making of feature
Making of a saga – 1:10 - Since this making of came out around Jedi

I say losing:

When star wars rules the world – 41 mins
Jamie Benning ROTJ Special effects – 5 mins
Jamie Benning: Inside Jabba – 20 mins

But like I said, 50gb option is fine with me.

I would personally prefer the 50GB with all the docs, but that’s just me.

Either way I can’t wait to complete the collection!

Thanks for the suggestions re: the ROTJ docos. Having played around with the puzzle pieces, and taken into account suggestions here, I’ll release a 25GB and a 50GB version.

25GB

  • Returning to Jedi (2007) - 148 mins
  • Empire of Dreams Part III (2004) - 30 mins
  • Classic Creatures (1983) - 48 mins
  • Jamie Benning: ROTJ Location Special Effects (2015) - 5 mins

50GB

  • Everything on the 25GB version, plus:
  • From SW to Jedi: The Making of a Saga (1983) - 70 mins
  • When Star Wars Ruled the World (2004) - 50 mins
  • Jamie Benning: Life Inside Jabba The Hutt (2015) - 20 mins
  • Star Wars: The Magic and the Mystery (1997) - 50 mins

It’s possible there will be room for one more on the 50GB. Will have to wait and see, but feel free to suggest something if you know of a really good one.
