Star Trek: Into Darkness
C
I’ve decided that I don’t quite hate this movie as much as I did yesterday. The performances are mostly very good and it feels like it tried to be a good political drama and tried to address the issue of whether Starfleet is a union of peaceful explorers or the Space-Navy (the line between the two is blurred sometimes in Trek). That said, it’s still a mess, and The Wrath of Khan retread-y bits (worst offender being the Kirk death scene, of course) still reek of a lack of confidence on the writer’s part.
Anyway, it’s definitely more enjoyable 3/4 TNG-era movies.
Glad you’re reevaluating even so soon after watching it. The film gets a very undeserved bad rap. Sure some of the plot devices are wonky but the film is so fun that it’s easy to forget and go along with the ride. The WOK retread talk gets blown out of proportion. Kirk’s death and Spock’s “KHAAAAAN!” are pretty much it when it comes to that. Really. What else is there (besides the mere presence of Khan)?
Anyway, it’s not nearly as memorable/charming/rewatchable as JJ and co.'s first effort but it’s still and enjoyable watch and significantly better than a number of other Trek films. Definitely not worth the hate.
