No, this project is strictly OOT. You could use this project as a basis for SE subtitles, but you’d need to alter the timing and lines, etc.

It looks like in at least one case, international theatrical subtitles made it onto a Laserdisc release (French ROTJ). I doubt this would have happened for Star Wars, but it’s possible it may have happened for one of the international laserdisc releases for which we don’t have a theatrical subtitle reference for ROTJ.
So if anyone happens to have a Spanish or Japanese laserdisc of ROTJ, I’d be interested to know what the alien subtitles look like. For Spanish, I imagine the subtitles will be approximately the same font/style as the English subtitles. For Japanese, I have no idea. If it turns out to be theatrical, I’d like a screencap of each subtitle. You could try Star Wars too, but I’m thinking 16mm prints are our best bet there.

I googled a little bit, but couldnt find if this has been already reported, some accents are wrong in the Hungarian subtitles for all three movies (checked v9.2, and some older ones I found next to my copy of Despecialized). Ő and ő (double accents) should be used instead of Õ and õ (diacritic mark tilde), and Ű and ű (again, double accents) should be used instead of Û and û (circumflex). This is probably caused by an unwanted latin2-latin1 conversion during editing sometime, and the correct characters got mapped to those (further information here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_acute_accent#ISO_8859-2 and here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Õ#Computer_encoding). I can send copies of the subtitles with replaced characters in .srt, but I didnt create .sup files.
Yes, Hungarian accents are already fixed in development and will be available in the next release (10.0).
As far as I’ve been able to tell, the backstory is this: Back in the pre-Unicode Dark Ages, both Hungarian and Romanian used substituted “similar” characters to cover characters that weren’t actually in the ISO-8859 code page they used. Hungarian and Romanian computers then could use custom fonts to map these similar characters to their correct appearance, and it all more or less worked, except when you wanted to exchange documents with someone else. And Hungarian and Romanian users probably became used to occasionally seeing the wrong characters and doing the substitution in their heads.
As of Unicode, there are now codepoints for the correct characters and there’s no reason for any of this substitution to happen, but it still does if the documents are old enough. For example, the Romanian subtitles on the official Blu-rays still display the wrong characters. I caught this and converted them over as they were being OCR’d. The Hungarian files came to me already in SRT format, so I missed the substitution. Sorry!
EDIT: Actually it looks like Romanian was a character substitution like I described, but Hungarian used an almost-but-not-quite identical ISO-8859 codepage, causing similar issues. Either way, it’s fixed in the next version.

Hello CatBus, it seems there are a few issues with the french subtitles. I’m a little bit busy right now but if you’re interested I could provide you a corrected srt file in a week or so, which would be more accurate to the original version (the current french srt are, I believe, based on the dubbing. They are fine but they often lack the original meaning). Let me know.
I’ve got someone working on a complete French re-translation (the current one seems to have issues in many places), but go ahead and mail me any changes, in case that complete re-translation plan doesn’t work out.

Hi, I am new to this project and the whole MKV / SRT setup, so please forgive me for stupid questions.
In the intro to this thread it states, quote : “Translations for burnt-in alien subtitles are also moved to the top of the frame.”
However, I cannot seem to get this to work. The scene with Greedo, the subtitles are mashed onto the burnt-in subtitles. Not good. I was hoping it would turn out on top of the screen.
What am I missing ?
Do I need to use a special SRT file for this to take effect ?

As far as I know it is not possible to have the srt subtitles at the top because they contain only text and no position information. If your player supports them you should use the .sub files instead.

Yeah. Looked into the srt file, and only text. So I figured that I must have missed something since the thread states my mentioned quote.

it should be .sup (was a typo by Discostu), but most software players don’t support those.
Yup, to clarify, only the SUP files included with Project Threepio support positioning, and they are the recommended format for that and other reasons. If you just got the SRT files, such as are included with some preservations, I’d recommend downloading the whole project. The SRT’s will do in a pinch, but it’s really not the best way to go.
I’ll PM a link if you haven’t found it yet.
EDIT: SUP files are supported by all software players I’ve tried, if you mux them into the video (instructions for this are included in the README). Without muxing–i.e. just specifying an external subtitle file, like you do with an SRT–I’d recommend MPC-HC.

Ah, see i only ever tried using them as external subtitles and everything i use doesn’t support them (not a windows user so i don’t use MPC-HC). I will have to try muxing them in sometime!
VLC may add this ability, I’m hoping. They have other issues I’m hoping they also address in 3.0, to have feature parity with MPC.
