I also have a new version of the '81 Crawl. I spent a few days working with the 35mm version and even managed to bring back the original stars from the print:

No trickery here, this is 100% 35mm, and just from the one source. I have about 3 hours of screen capture that I took while working on it which I am editing down to something more watchable and which will reveal how it was done… Stay tuned…

Well, <bleep>! i look forward to seeing your screen capture, and the crawl of course.

I am sure DarthLucas will agree that having a FILM version of the 81 crawl in the SSE is the perfect solution!

Well, that’s just an insane difference. Congrats and thanks.

Damn, that’s impressive. Thanks for all the work, Darth Lucas, but it looks like this is the way to go!

Could somebody post a chapter list for this that can be pasted into tsmuxer? Thanks in advance!

Wow! Fantastic! If you can get the flyover color corrected a bit I would definitely prefer you use that version over mine! I will still send you the link, but seriously well done!

Well, Color Correction isn’t really one of my strengths. However, I ran the frame through Dre’s Color Balance (Beta) program and this is what it created - Better? Looks less red, but too yellow to me, at least in the browser.

Perhaps this is a better idea: Here is the whole frame (without any color correction - well, levels have been adjusted obviously, and perhaps too much):

If you can color correct it, in Photoshop or whatever, I can then use Dre’s Color match tool to build a LUT and apply the correction to the rest of the shot. If that doesn’t work, then I’ll just have to upload the whole thing for you and maybe you can correct it?

That is nice indeed Williarob. Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Looking great Rob! For CC you could use Dre’s color matching tool and match it to the 77 crawl/flyover.

For sure! I’ll give it a go when I can.

EDIT: I like the idea of attempting to color match to 77 though if that would work.

Here is a pretty quick correction. I’ll try to further refine it but without correcting each element separately (which I assume would mess up the color matching process) it’s hard to get it looking right. There’s a lot of noise in the source which makes it incredibly difficult to correct. But anyways:

Here is another quick correction, this time of the sample you posted having gone through Dre’s color balance program. I think that as a starting point yields a better end result. Though the problem I keep encountering is that once you get the shadows and highlights on the star destroyer looking more or less right, Tatooine starts to look too cool to my eyes.

I think the best way is to colour correct the 20th century fox logo, and then leave the rest of it. The 20th cent logo should look the same in both versions, but every other part of the 81 crawl/flyover was newly done and has its own subtleties. Very Nice work Rob, can’t wait to see the upload!

I agree with RU.08 that because this is a special effect recomposited a couple years after the film was released, there is bound to be some dissimilarities between this shot and the one from 1977.

That colour correction looks way too blue.

I’m sorry if this has been brought up before, but I’m seeing a tint-shift between cuts of the scene with Darth choking out the rebel guy near the start. In some angles, its colored “light-mint” which I expected. Then it shifts to a light magenta tone when the camera changes, and then back to mint.

I’m assuming it must be inherent to the actual stock that was used to make 1.0-1.6? If not, am I just crazy, is my TV broke, etc?

Thanks guys!

I know, that’s the problem. I’m trying to find a balance between making the star destroyer more of a neutral tone without making everything else appear too blue. It’s a delicate balance to try to find, but I’m working on it.

Actually, if Williarob could get me a raw, completely uncorrected frame, it may actually yield a better result. The levels correction being done beforehand can affect how the shadows change when color corrected. With them already being dark, if I move the shadows away from yellow and toward blue, it can make all of the shadows a dark blue instead of black (this has been a major obstacle). So if at all possible, I’d like to see how a completely raw frame handles when color corrected.
