I just tried doing that really quickly (with Sound Forge and an Audio HQ filter) and it actually isn't that bad at all. It was a little tinny, but I think that's because of the process I was using. It's actually not bad, though.

I think that they should use a better version of that process with PAL. I think it'd make more people happy because it's staying more true to the original pitches of music and voices.
