The Raven (2011)
A period serial-killer thriller with Edgar Allen Poe as the hero? Why not! And it kind of works too. It’s chock full of historical that-didn’t-happens but I’m sure Poe would’ve approved of his life being used to make such a nasty, dark work of fiction.
John Cusack is brilliant as Poe and so is Luke Evans as the obligatory “policeman who really, really wants to catch the bad guy”. Alice Eve is enchanting as ever but is little more than a damsel in distress. Brendan Gleeson is in it too, playing the exact same character he always does, but he’s as good as ever so it doesn’t matter.
These sort of films are ten-a-penny in modern (American) cinema but it was a neat twist to see things moved back a century and a half. It’s a worthwhile watch if you’re in the mood for this sort of thing.
I give it 3 pendulums out of 5.
