I am far too sleep deprived to tell if I’m being dense, but I can’t figure out how to load the two images to get the other buttons to be active. What am I missing?

I just did a quick test with the new version. The speed increase is incredible. Many thanks again for the update. I’m very curious about the forthcoming predinction tool. 😃

I just can’t get it to run. It’s in the same folder as the matlab dlls (C:\Program Files (x86)\MATLAB\MATLAB Compiler Runtime\v714\runtime\win32), but it doesn’t find them.

You need to add something to your PATH Environment variable. The installer should have done this, but it didn’t do it on my system either:

Right click on “My Computer”, click on properties, Advanced, Environment Variables, and then add a semi colon and “C:\Program Files (x86)\MATLAB\MATLAB Compiler Runtime\v714\runtime\win32” to the end of the PATH. There should already be a bunch of paths in there, separated by semi colons. Keep clicking OK until all the dialog boxes are gone and then try launching the app again.

Okay, that did it. You should add that in your tutorial. Thanks.

After a second reinstall, the tool seems to working properly. Thanks again, DrDre!

Could you implement TGA file support in the tool Dre? Using virtualdub to output an image sequence, I’m getting about 4x faster export times for Targa RLE Compressed vs PNG fast compress, with equivalent projected file size. Definitely could use the speed increase (an hour and a half vs nearly 7 hours for Despecialized 2.7)

Or is there a better way to create image sequences someone could point me in the direction of?

I will have to check whether MATLAB supports reading and writing TARGA images.

No, a model should be built within 30 seconds for the default settings.

The color matching tool v1.2 released! Please send me a PM, if you’re interested.

Hi DrDre, sounds great! Not sure which version it is (v1.2 or v1.3 like the subject says).

I renamed the tool, and started again at v1.0, so we’re almost back at v1.3.

I’ve debugged the color matching tool v1.2, such that it should no longer give problems with some of the LUTs, that are created by the tool. Please PM me, if you’re interested.

Just be clear, this is the debugged v1.2, not v1.3.

The debugged color matching tool v1.2 offers much improved color matching capabilities. It’s more accurate, more stable, and much faster. Here’s an example for a red faded 35mm frame from The Empire Strikes Back shared by poita a while ago. The reference is an image of a number of home video versions of the same frame. In this case the frame has been matched to the 2004 DVD colors.

Niiiiiiiiice! Awesome work Dr. Dre!

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

For color correcting Empire, what is the most accurate reference available? The 2004/2011 versions had a blue tint while we know that the GOUT was also not accurate. So how exactly does a theatrical restoration/reconstruction approach this challenge of having accurate colors for Empire?

I believe there are quite a few 16mm prints, that have excellent colors. These prints are generally sourced from their 35mm counterpart, and thus have the original color timing, albeit a bit more contrasty, because they’re another generation apart from the original color timed interpositive.

Ahhh okay, interesting. So the 16mm prints were sourced from 35mm prints back in 1980. And now they’re used as color references. I guess this means that 16mm prints don’t have much color fading? Or, if they do, then it’s predictable and easily correctable by an algorithm?

Since the year 1982 there’s been a dramatic improvement of the stability of prints. So, while 16mm prints created after 1981 were sourced from notoriously unstable 35mm prints, these 35mm prints were still in good shape at the time, and as such their colors were preserved through the much more stable post-1981 16mm prints. So, once you have a 16mm scan with accurate colors, you can match the faded 35mm print to the 16mm in an HDR color space using the color matching tool, followed by a gamma correction, to bring the contrast back to 35mm levels.

Wow, that is some great problem-solving. And I guess that means we can have accurate-looking Empire AND Jedi. Great work on the color correcting/matching tool!

So… is anyone putting their hand up to match the Empire and Jedi blurays to these 16mm colours?

I have access to a non-faded Empire 35mm print that is available for me to view, so we can have an accurate to the print restoration.
Many people may not like the colours of the original, they probably aren’t what they remember, but we can certainly match a scan to it.
