Or, I should say, they don't award anything to mainstream movies like PotC, TPotC, Spiderman 2, ect., despite all of those being excellent movies. The academy is equally turned off by explosions, guns, swordfights, and about anything else that makes a good story a great film.
Winners: Million Dollar Baby... A boxing film about euthanasia? Sounds oscar-ish to me...
The Aviator... A drama about a *GASP* womanizing Leonardo DiCaprio?
Ray... A movie about a blind blackman. Double minority factor? Academy is going to enjoy it.
Now all of these may be great movies; I haven't seen any of them, but that's besides the point. The Academy is way out of touch with mainstream america or even the rest of hollywood in general, so there must be something more than the fact Charlie Kaufman's movies aren't explosive.
