The control scheme really works perfectly fine. It's hard to expain, but it works. In fact I can't ever remember having a problem with it at all during a battle. I guess it has something to do with the fact that you aren't on a 3D plane like Unreal Tournement or something. There's not a whole lot going to the sides of you, since Samus is usually in rooms/corridors. Just stop asking questions and get the damn game.
