With all the contradictions and visual discrepancies, it’s impossible for the prequels to be considered anything other than expanded universe or plain fan fiction. If Obi-Wan says him and Father Skywalker were good friends, they were. If Tarkin assumes Obi-Wan is old enough to have passed away, he is. If the Republic is said to have existed for 1000 generations, it did. If Leia remembers her mother, then she was alive during the time Leia reached the age of reason.

But most of important of all, the Old Republic is described as “a more civilized age” and that the dark times began with the Empire. This not consistent at all with a corrupt republic filled in manipulable Yes-men and heroes who behead enemies they’ve just disarmed.
