njvc-

That is exciting news…and I very much look forward to seeing the fruits of your labors!

The one MAJOR component of your project that I still believe to be a miss is:

njvc said:

  1. 50GB Movie + Features disk
    Includes:
  • Everything listed on disk 1 and 2
  • 11 Audio Commentaries (6 of which did not fit on the 25GB disk)

The fatal flaw that I see in it is that it is terribly redundant (with the exception of the 6 additional audio commentaries…which, if I understand correctly, would not be playable via set-top due to the 8 audio track limitation) and inefficient. That’s roughly 50 EXTRA gigabytes (with little to no added value) that needs to be assembled (by you), uploaded to multiple distribution channels (by you and others), downloaded by end-users (and maintained indefinitely on private and public torrent sites by those same end-users).

Whenever Harmy releases an update to one of his DE titles (OR if you want to make some other change to either feature or BONUS content), that’s roughly 75gb (instead of 25gb) instantly outdated and will then need to go through this exact SAME distribution process each time. For a project that adds NO new content, whose PRIMARY benefits are format and organization, and that is directly tied to another project that is currently under active development this is NOT a sustainable model.

I assure you that my suggestions here (and previously in this thread) are ENTIRELY presented in an effort to try and benefit you and your efforts as well as those that would recognize and support your efforts. I absolutely believe that there is REALLY good merit in this project. IF done well, this project would clearly provide a SOLID benefit (and you have already come a good way further since your initial effort), but moving to a BD50 format for the feature portion WITHOUT a clear and practical reason for doing do is a mistake (and, even at this late stage, I still hope that you might reconsider).

Whatever your decision, I do wish you well and success in this project! It is my hope that I have successfully conveyed the substance and reasons for my suggestions by this point (…and IF you decide to stick to your guns, then so be it). As it is very clearly my wish to NOT detract from you or this project, I will now make an end.

Respectfully submitted,

-A.S.

p.s. towne32 THANK YOU for taking the time and going to the effort to try and explain things (I did understand the proposed format, I just saw an a significant issue and was simply trying to address it). I took no offense at anything you said and I hope the same was true of you. I do like to selectively use ALL CAPS to emphasize selected words or phrases (in much the same way as others might format as bold or italicize)…I know that it is kinda “quirky”, but yeah, please do read it as emphasizing that word or phrase (and definitely NOT as “shouting”).

My best to you, as well. 😉

I don’t consider the 50GB to be redundant at all. It includes the bonus commentaries, which are indeed accessible via the menu, and has all the special features on the one disk, which is a great advantage to many people. For those who do not want the extras, you are welcome to download the movie only version.

The 8 track restriction is enforced by Encore, but through use of multiAVCHD, I was able to add 32 audio tracks to the disk. 8 are accessible through the menus (via menu buttons), and the others are accessible via the ‘audio’ button on your bluray remote.

Same goes for subtitles. the first 16 are accessible via the menu, and the remaining 16 are accessible via the subtitles button on your bluray remote.

EDIT: please see my updated post, which might help clarify for you exactly what is on each disk, then you can decide which one you think you want to download. I know a lot of people are looking forward to the 50GB, so I’m not sure why you are upset about it. The goal of the project was always to try and create the definitive Star Wars bluray disk, and for me, that is the one with everything on it. It’s certainly the one I’ll have on my shelf!

I agree with you that there is great merit in the 25GB versions, but they were purely created for this community, as I am all about the 50GB version. And it’s looking great 😃

A.S. - you have made your point. please accept that you might not convince anyone to change their plans.

njvc - WOW! I am impressed by everything going on these 50GB versions. I am really looking forward to this.

I understand how you might think there are significant issues. Although it is 2016, I’m aware that not everyone has uncapped internet, fiber connections, and so on. If those were issues for him (or if he expressed any reservations), I would hardly beg him to take it on. And we would have to all think about other options. But, for him, like for many of us, the idea of uploading 150Gb seems to be extremely trivial in this day and age. As I said, Harmy’s releases are infrequent. And fortunately, you won’t have to download it.

Thanks for further clarifying what you meant. Now that I know that I understand where you were coming from, I can say with complete confidence that the points you’ve made are all extremely silly. Since you have made your point, as dahmage said, we will appreciate it if you no longer attempt to talk him out of working on the option that many of us will prefer and that he seems quite excited to produce. It would be a completely different story if this impacted the versions that you will be downloading. I think you should be glad about the redundancy, since it is your BD25 versions that would be dropped, not the BD50. But you’re still getting what you want, so there is no need to complain. Thank you.

This needs to be emphasized. njvc is doing an amazing job for all of us and to complain about something irrelevant that doesn’t affect you in the slightest is just rude.

Also putting select WORDS in all CAPS just makes you LOOK even more SILLY.

If Frinkbot taught us anything, and he didn’t, it’s that it’s ALL caps or NONE.

This needs to be emphasized. njvc is doing an amazing job for all of us and to complain about something irrelevant that doesn’t affect you in the slightest is just rude.

The most absurd part was running in like, “Oh my god. Is it too late? No? STOP THE PRESSES. I fear that you have made a grave mistake and accidentally did not read my post a few pages back [link]. Surely it was not ignored while more relevant issues were discussed. Okay now that I’ve gotten your attention could you just release the version of this that I’m interested in? Lol the redundancy is going to hurt my eyes if I need to see the link next to the version I want to click on. Ok thxbye.”

PARAPHRASED. Obvously A.S. didn’t say it in that intentionally rude tone, but I think it conveys how it came across to for those of us awaiting the BD50 to have someone isn’t affected by it to try to shut it down for no reason.

I think an ‘insert’ card would also be important in this case, to describe all the audio tracks and subs that will not be present on the menu.

Given how massive and full these discs are, it might be a good idea to have the members here test them out before making the version permanent by uploading to the spleen, etc.

Author

All audio and subtitles are listed in the menus, but the ‘non button’ items are listed on a seperate page with instructions to access via remote. I agree that an insert card would be a good addition though.

It’s ok, I am able to remux the official MKV now without any loss of picture quality so will get started on Empire and Jedi soon.

As for the Star Wars set, I would like to add Harmy’s recent BBC interview as one final feature, then will upload over this weekend.

I will snag all of them and help you seed.

That’s good, but I was under the assumption that you would want the lossless masters to reencode them to fit BD50s.

I saw that clip that someone posted in the 2.5 thread from the interview and I’ve been wanting to hear the whole thing! I love your taste in special features, njvc.

I’m massively anticipating the BD50. Incredible work njvc.

The lossless master was mostly in case he couldn’t get the existing video streams working. But he did.

I’m not sure if he really even has much room to spare. But if he does go about reencoding, we might also want to discuss encoding settings as Harmy’s were already well optimized. Wouldn’t want him encoding h264 with adobe and unintentionally downgrading the video quality or something. It also introduces new chances for errors to slip in.

Author
Time

It was a great relief to be able to include the original video stream and not have to try and figure out how to encode the video myself at the same quality as Harmy. And it also means I can move on to Empire and Jedi without hesitation.

Heading out for a much needed vacation for a few days, but I would love to take a look at this if you want more eyes before widespread release. But I have a lot of confidence that you will get it right.

Regarding covers etc, anyone working on that? I imagine there are already some despecialized ones that could be a starting point? (On my mobile and feeling way too lazy to search for anything)

Thanks that sounds good. The 25GB film only version is uploaded but the 50gb will take the weekend. I’ll let you know when it’s ready.

There’s a thread that probably has 100 or so options for despecialized.

Author
Time

True, but they don’t lay out all the extras in this release 😉

He suggested that there might be despecialized ones to use as a starting point. Was just saying there are quite a lot to choose from as far as that goes.
