When you were introduced to Star Wars for the first time

I was just a little curious to see as to how the community’s members were introduced to the greatest science fiction franchise of all time. Me personally, I was introduced when my Dad bought me the 2008 OT box set containing the GOUT and those ugly 2004 Special Editions. I still have the GOUT, and I even watch it occasionally. As for the Special Editions, I think I threw them out. The GOUT is also the only version I watch to this day.

Sometime in 2005 I decided to give this “Star Wars” thing people keep talking about a try, and I watched The Phantom Menace. I didn’t like it so I pushed the franchise aside.

2 years later, friend forced me to watch A New Hope. And that’s it pretty much.

I believe I first saw the OUT around 1995, since my dad had the Faces box set. I don’t know for sure though since I was only 2 when those came out.

This thread is not going to make me feel very young…

I used to think I was the young one here. Guess I’ve been here too long…

I saw them around 97 or so. (Don’t worry, it was the OOT - Faces VHS set.) Have watched them repeatedly ever since.

98 or 99 leading up to TPM. Don’t have a clue what version it was, they were lent VHS tapes is all I can remember.

I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

In the late 90’s, I saw the Lego X-Wing in a magazine and even though I had no idea what a “Star Wars” was, I knew that this is the coolest thing ever. When I learned from my parents that it was from a movie and that this movie was eventually on TV, I was completely hooked up.

I think it was around 2000, I saw part of The Phantom Menace on TV because they were doing a marathon of all the movies released up to that point. But since it was late at night and I was eight years old at the time, I didn’t get to see the whole film. In the months that followed I would catch bits and pieces of the various movies during reruns, but I don’t think I actually got to see any of them in full until a few years later.

1995 or 1996 on VHS, then the SE in theaters in 1997.

Circa 1996 or 1997. According to my dad I was fascinated by my brothers Darth Vader action figure and I guess it grew from there. I was like 4 at the time. First trilogy set was the '95 ‘One Last Time’ set. I actually have a picture somewhere of me unwrapping it when I got it as a gift from my grandmother. Dad, stepmom, brother and I saw the SE of ANH in the theatre.

The early 80’s - Star Wars and Empire on tv and the figures and books and Return of the Jedi sticker album until 1985 when my dad took me to a triple-bill showing. It’s been in my life for literally as long as I can remember!

Don’t worry, Frink. This thread is making me feel old.

I first saw them probably around 1992 or so. Star Wars has been a massive part of my life ever since.

Early 80’s, though I can’t remember the exact circumstance. Pretty sure it was ESB recorded off HBO on one of them newfangled VHS machines.

When I was 5 I begged my Mom to take me to see The Phantom Menace. I ended up falling asleep. Should have asked her to take me to see The Matrix.

My mom drove me here every week during the summer of 1977.

Oh, and all of you 30-year-olds talking about how old you feel - let’s revisit this in twenty years.

First watched it sometime in the 90s on the 92 VHS tapes. Changed my young impressionable life. Only movies of any kind I had ever seen before it were Disney movies. So it’s kind of ironic that Star Wars is itself technically a Disney movie now…

Sometimes in the 80’s a friend of mine came to me with “Hey, you like movies with robots and space ships? I have a movie which you might like” and we went to his place and watched together Star Wars, a millionth generation VHS copy. If I remember it correctly it was in German with Polish “lektor” voiceover track or something like that. I didn’t speak any of those languages, and the VHS was such a high copy that in some scenes I could barely see what’s going on, but I absolutely loved everything I’ve seen, I could understand what was going on purely by visual storytelling.

Later in early 90’s I’ve seen the whole trilogy numerous times on TV in various countries and various dubs, I even bought some 90’s VHS releases. Then in 1997 I’ve seen the special editions, bought THOSE on VHS, then I bought the 2004 DVDs and then my hunt for a digital release of the OOT began.

At around 2005 or so I had lots of Star Wars Lego sets, but I hadn’t actually seen any of the movies yet. So I was pretty excited when my Dad told me that he had bought four of the Star Wars movies. But I guess he forgot that DVDs are a thing, so he bought some second-hand VHS tapes of the OUT and TPM instead. He didn’t know about the Special Editions or anything, so I guess I got pretty lucky.

Yeah Quazz. You lucked out pretty well there (as long as they weren’t SE VHS tapes like I grew up with).

I can’t remember when I saw Star Wars for the first time… I’ve just known it and loved it all my life (I was born in '77). My earliest memory is of my dad recording Star Wars for me off of First Choice Super Channel (now The Movie Network), when it aired on TV for the first time in February of '83. I would have been 5 at the time, but already knew Star Wars well enough that I was over the moon at the prospect of actually owning a copy of the movie (I guess my parents must have rented it from the video store pretty regularly until then). I actually still have a copy of that VHS cassette.

As for ESB, I don’t think I actually saw the movie at the theatre, but I remember my dad and uncle coming back from the movie and debating whether or not Vader was really Luke’s father.

But I do distinctly remember seeing ROTJ in the theatre while on vacation in '83… good times.
