The Release Date Order: 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 7

OUT
This one you should also use theatrical TPM.

The Machete Order 4, 5, 2, 3, 6, 7

2004/2011 (pick your poison, really).

The Machete Order for kids 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6 ,7

2004/2011

The Modified Machete Order 4, 5, 6, 2, 3, 7

2004/2011

The Storyteller Order 4, 1, 2, 5, 3, 6, 7

2004/2011

The “skip the bad ones” Order 4, 5, 6, 7

OUT

River Song Order 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

You can’t really go wrong here.

You could also probably replace any of the SEs with the 97 and it would still work fine. I just stick to the “skip the bad ones” order myself and don’t bother with the SE.

If you’re going to include the prequels, then the Blu-ray version does fit in with the continuity a little better thanks to things like the Ian McDiarmid Emperor hologram and the Temeura Morrison Boba Fett voice in ESB. Notice I do not mention Hayden Ghost as an example, as I don’t think that makes any sense no matter what unless you’re going to make Obi-Wan Ewan McGregor too, and even then it wouldn’t make sense since Luke wouldn’t recognize him… And the new galactic celebration montage also no longer makes sense with TFA since we clearly see that all traces of the Empire did not magically fall immediately and the struggle did not instantly end with the death of the Emperor.

So here’s what I would use for any of your sequences featuring the prequels:

  • Theatrical cuts of 4 and 6
  • Blu-ray cuts of 5 (the only one where changes actually add to continuity) and 1/2/3 (CGI Yoda in 1 fits better with the other prequels than the puppet in the theatrical cut of 1)
  • Blu-ray/Theatrical cut of 7 (it is the same)

For release order though, you might want to use the theatrical cuts for all of them if you’re interested in seeing them as they were originally released.

And of course if you want to see the “George approved” saga, you’ll have to go with the Blu-ray versions of 1-6 and just leave out 7. In this continuity you get to pretend everyone lived happily ever after following the end of 6 so the celebration montage makes sense again.

Otherwise, if you’re going to “skip the bad ones” or go with some other custom order, then you’re free to choose whichever cuts you see fit. It all comes down to personal preference really. I personally slightly prefer the Blu-ray version of ESB with the exception of one change (the replacement of the “Bring my shuttle” line) for example, but if you’re a purist (and you probably have purist leanings if you’re on this site) nothing will ever be an acceptable substitute for the OUT.

That’s not machete order, the point of machete order is to cut episode 1.

That’s an order a user named Cap suggested years ago here. At least I think that’s who first suggested it.

I enjoy Revisited but I just can’t watch it anymore when I’ve got Despecialized available in HD. I’ve never seen kk650’s but I don’t see the point in watching something that is only partly despecialized.

I’ve long used L8wrtr’s PT. I keep hearing how good Hal’s are and I have them, but I’m kind of burned out on the PT.

Despite its name, that’s not its purpose. The cutting of episode 1 is only secondary compared to the true purpose of machete order. All these things matter more:

Beginning the saga with ANH

Beginning with TPM sucks because it lacks the explanation of the world it takes place in. Most can agree that ANH is the better way to first experience Star Wars.

Preserving the twist

Nuff said.

Learning Anakins Backstory then experiencing his Redmeptiom

Perhaps the greatest glory of machete order which is that after the reveal that Vader is Lukes father, the mystery is evermore present so the prequel trilogy tells the story of this tradegy. Then once you jump back into episode 6 his redemption means that much more.

When watching the blu Rays I stick with cutting episode 1 but I find Cloak of Deception is a vast improvement that makes TPM very enjoyable and as a bonus I get to see Duel of the fates.

Return of the Jedi: Remastered

Lord of the Rings: The Darth Rush Definitives

The point is not what it’s purpose is, but that the order 4-5-2-3-6 is called machete order and the order 4-5-1-2-3-6 is not. Words mean things.

Yes, and in this case the word “machete” means to cut out Ep 1, because that’s what machetes do. They cut.

I could call a bicycle an airplane because getting from A to B is more important than pedaling, but people would still give me strange looks.

Machete order is 4-5-2-3-6, if you want to refer to 4-5-1-2-3-6, you can’t say machete order, you can call it preserve-the-twist order or cap order or, like some apparently do, Rister order.

Also, cutting Episode 1 is important because you reduce the time of suffering through the prequels by 2 hours.

Why not both? Becasue that’s exactly what Machete order means, while it does not only mean to put the prequels between 5 and 6.

Machete order was invented in 2011, while 4-5-1-2-3-6 dates back to 2009. Obviously, Machete order builds up on that and cuts TPM.

A real life machete has following properties: A long, sharp blade and a big handle. Properties of a knife: small blade and handle. Would you call a knife “Machete” or “Small Machete”? If you want a catchy name, call it Rister order, I’ve seen that one a lot.
