I seem to recall some kind of Star Wars training event for kids at Disney Land over 15 years ago.
In all seriousness, I did actually here that it was a sympathetic metaphor for the Viet Kong vs. U.S. soldiers.
In The Making of a Saga documentary, Lucas said he was influenced by his early involvement with Apocalypse Now, in having a primitive culture that overcomes a technological one. (Which was going to be Wookiees originally.) Nothing was said about it meaning anything more than that.
That makes sense. I actually heard it from a friend in high school who insisted that George Lucas was a communist. He was a bit weird though.
