i have also played around with trying to make the whole r2 scene less…odd i guess is the best word to describe it. my thoughts on it is that we dont see r2 until the very end. in my version SKB destroys the New Republic after Han dies as we all here have discussed. then when everyone is at their low point, bb8 rolls up to r2. 3p0 gives his speech about him being in low power mode and they both roll/walk away. then r2 comes alive.
