Info: Star Wars: Episode III - VHS Australian release

This is the first thread I’ve made on here but I managed to get ahold of one of these in a lot after looking for so long.

I knew there were UK copies popping up at times on Ebay, but I had not seen an Australian/New Zealand one since its release.

This is a scan of the cover, sadly has a few ex-rental stickers on it that can’t be taken off (price tag was easy to take off), which I will try and patch out.

Here’s some shots from the capture:

Send me a PM if you’re interested in this.

Would be interesting to compare it with the full screen DVD, and see if the cropping is the same.

The Dolby Stereo mix might be worth a preservation by itself if there any differences in the mix?

Now, if only one of these would somehow fall into the wrong hands. 😉

Would be interesting, might be the same though, I remember my full screen DVD of episode 2 matching our VHS copy years ago.

Yeah, I’d like to see some capture of the TFA tape if that ever happened. 😄

As would I. I’m glad to see the ROTS VHS being preserved as well.

I would upload to Myspleen but I can’t as I’m not able to get Connectable for seeding

I’ve no horse in that race, but I’ll just mention that a seeder needn’t be connectable.
As long as one or more leechers is, data will flow eventually.
Might need to restart your torrent app after a connectable peer joins the swarm…

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Wait… There’s a VHS of TFA? Why?

It’s an anti-piracy measure that Delta Airlines is using for its in-flight presentations.

I tried that several times but there was nothing coming out when I uploaded something on there once, even with a couple of leechers. Looked at guides on getting your connection open, but couldn’t find anything that matched my settings.

DVD players allegedly tend to skip on bumpy flights. And possibly the airlines don’t want to pay to upgrade the entertainment systems of older planes?

I’ve seen bootlegs of airline tapes before, and something like property of Trans Amercian Airlines will randomly flash at the bottom of the screen a couple times during a movie.
I’m surprised Sony’s 8mm video format never caught on for airline use, as it was much smaller.

^ I saw that the other day, very interesting read. It’s a shame he didn’t post any screenshots of what the transfer looked like.

Very nice! I was under the impression ROTS on VHS was never released is Aus!

A note on the stickers, I recently bought a couple movies from a local video store which has their logo/stickers plastered on the cover. Using canola oil (from a spray can) I was able to get the stickers to come off. You have to be pretty careful and take your time, spraying the oil onto some other surface, dipping your finger into it and applying your finger to the sticker and carefully prying it off but I was able to do it!

Here’s one thing I’ve always wondered: does the ROTS VHS have 2 unique spine images or just 1?
Like for example, The Phantom Menace VHS had Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon on one side, and Darth Maul on the other side.
Return of the Jedi’s SE VHS had Luke on one side, and the Emperor on the other.
Here’s an image showing the two TPM images: http://www.skittlez.co.uk/worldofblackout/blogref/atoz/v06lg.jpg

I’ve always seen ROTS VHS boxes that only have one spine (since they’re not slipcases). But is there a version out there that is a slipcase and has 2 unique spine images? Just curious.

Well f**k, now I’m wishing I got this up earlier. Unfortunately got hit with ransomware earlier in the week and affected all our computers where we had to reinstall Windows, didn’t lose everything thankfully, mostly 2016 stuff. But the final output I made for this was included too, so I have to recapture it. But I have a better setup this time where I can do the audio lossless too (if there was any value in it. lol).

So I’ll post another update when I manage to get this up again (and replace the screenshots on the first post).

Just encoded this again and preparing it for upload. Gonna be uploading it to Dropbox instead, just got a Pro account, so PM me in around 24 hours if you’re interested.

Mentioned it before but if anyone wanted this on Myspleen, someone else would have to upload it there as I can’t get my connection open for seeding with this setup.

Little bump here, copy pasting most of what I posted in the Goblet of Fire thread from being the same topic.

I’ve done a new V2 capture of this tape. I wasn’t really impressed with my last one looking back at it, mainly from the smearing artifact that was present from my DVD recorder passthrough (for S-Video out). I upgraded my VCR to a S-VHS deck sometime ago, but my old capture device would have massive warping making it useless without the DVD recorder, so I kept it.

An example of the smearing:

Recently I changed my capture device to a Hauppauge USB-Live 2 (as a recommendation from someone) which plays much better with my S-VHS deck, so I could remove the DVD recorder and the smearing it added. There may be a tiny bit of warping but nothing noticeable, certainly the best I’ll get without forking $$$$ on an external TBC.

Since there’s no smearing now, I’ve done a Progressive encode for the film itself this time also to help it quality-wise while keeping it for single layer DVD, while everything else is Interlaced. Certainly better than the original where I actually captured it deinterlaced already and got reinterlaced it. lol

A tiny little bit of combing can be seen in spots, mostly on the top of the frame, if you pause it which I was gonna blend, but it made the picture more softer than I expected, so I left it untouched. I played it back on my CRT and it looks fine, so I didn’t need to do it.

Comparison shot between the two as far as the finer detail goes. I was gonna use Framecompare but the site has refused to work for myself for months now, so here’s both:

Version 2:

So if there’s anyone that’s wanting a replacement for this, feel free to send a DM. I stopped responding to requests in threads ever since I got no emails (for some reason) for at least a months worth on the Chronologically LOST HD thread.
