One my closest friends, aged 39, recently revealed to me that she was raped at age 15 and she never told anybody. All I really knew what to do to handle her telling me that (I’m 22) was to give her a big hug and tell her she was still beautiful and infinitely valuable, but the fact that after all this time I’m the first person she’s told says there’s at least some room for a change of thought process. I wasn’t even born yet when it happened and now I’m old enough to have a meaningful conversation with her about it. I’m afraid this is probably more common than we really wish to believe.
