THE GRUDGE REVIEW

NO DELETED SCENES !? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING !? YOU GET A FIVE PART "A POWERFUL RAGE MAKING-OF" DOCUMENTARY AND A "UNDER THE SKIN" FEATURETTE ALONG WITH CAST AND CREW COMMENTARY. THE SOUND IS MASTERED IN HIGH DEFINITION DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1. YOU ALSO GET THE PICTURE IN 1.85 ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN.

THIS IS A RENTAL.

A SIDE NOTE: IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE I SUGGEST THAT YOU WATCH THE ORIGINAL JAPANESE VERSION "JU ON." IT WAS MADE BY THE SAME WRITER/DIRECTOR AS THE GRUDGE. MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THAT IT IS FAR SUPERIOR TO THE AMERICAN VERSION WHICH SHOWS YOU HOW AMERICAN MOVIE STUDIOS HAVE THE POWER TO TURN A GREAT MOVIE INTO A PISS POOR, PALE IN COMPARISON REMAKE.

RAY REVIEW

YOU GET TONS OF BONUS FEATURES ON THIS TWO DISC DVD SET INCLUDING 14 NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN DELETED SCENES, COMPLETE UNCUT MUSIC PERFORMANCES FROM THE MOVIE, A "WALKING IN HIS SHOES" FEATURETTE, "RAY REMEMBERED" FEATURETTE, AND A DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY TRACK. YOU ALSO GET TWO VERSION OF THE FILM: THEATRICAL AND EXTENDED WITH OVER 25 MINUTES OF ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE. HERE'S THE PROBLEM WITH THE EXTENDED EDITION: THE BRANCHING IS AWFUL. THE NEW FOOTAGE IS IN FULL SCREEN (THE MOVIE IS IN WIDESCREEN). ALSO, WHEN THE NEW SCENE GOES BACK TO THE ORIGINAL FILM YOU LOOSE A FEW SECONDS OF THE MOVIE WHICH CAN CAUSE YOU TO BE LOST. IF I MAY, I SUGGEST ONLY WATCHING THE THEATRICAL VERSION. DON'T GET ME WRONG. THE NEW FOOTAGE IS GREAT, BUT ONE SHOULD VIEW IT SEPERATELY.

THIS IS A RENTAL.

MR. 3000 REVIEW

THE AUDIO CAN BE IN EITHER DTS 5.1 DIGITAL SURROUND SOUND OR DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 SURROUND SOUND. BOTH ARE GREAT ESPECIALLY DURING THE BASEBALL GAME SCENES. IT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE RIGHT THERE. YOU GET TOO MANY TO LIST HERE "GRAND SLAM" BONUS FEATURES. THE ASPECT RATIO IS 1.85:1-ENHANCED FOR 16x9 TELEVISIONS.

THIS IS A BUY.

Sounds like the 'extended branching' feature in the original X-Men DVD. Man, I hated that.

Too cool; I'm impressed that you've resisted the urge to be an autograph hound.

I got that impression from the doc. Besides, who really wants to be primarily known for a role where you buried underneath several tons of makeup, latex and yak hair?

I don't think I could resist it. I'd be too geeked out. I'd try, but I'd crack.

Dayv (and anyone else), I was wondering if you could help me out with something. I recently bought season 4 of the "X-Files" and it has to be the worst picture I've ever seen on DVD. Close to unwatchable. I was wondering if there may have been some sort of recall, and if not, what should I do about contacting them and/or complaining?

THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL AS FAR AS I KNOW. THERE SHOULD BE A CONSUMER HOTLINE NUMBER IN SMALL PRINT ON THE BOX. THE PHONE NUMBER SHOULD BE TOLL FREE. LET FOX KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR SET. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT THEY WILL SEND YOU A REPLACEMENT SET AFTER YOU'VE GIVEN THEM SOME INFORMATION.

Although, I believe there were some complaints about the picture quality @ the time, and the reason given by Fox was the source material. Nevertheless, good luck.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I guess that it IS the source material, because the blacker the scene is (and the X-Files is almost always dark) grainier it gets. I can stand some grain, but I could honestly get a better picture with a UHF connection than I can from these dvds, not to mention I saw no problems with the first 3 season dvd sets. Anyway, I guess I can live with the crappy picture so long as I know that they are all that way, and it's not my particular set that is defective. Thanks again.

Dayv, do you know if the new "Heat" special edition has a new transfer? Are you going to review it?

speaking of reviews on rereleases...it would be nice to see a review on the new versions of Leon: The Professional, 5th Element, and Spaceballs when it comes out.

Heat is not a new transfer. I've checked with several forums, and all have said that it is identical.

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Thanks, GundarkHunter.

I was afraid of that. I only checked one site, but they too hinted that it wasn't a new transfer. Oh well. It's one of my favorite films of all time, but I think I might just stick with the old dvd ( or at least until the new one is 10 bucks at Circuit City or whathaveyou).

Well, the new one is a 2-disc, so if you really want the extras, you could go for it.
