The Blackened Mantle (3-in-1 Prequel Trilogy Fan Edit) is finally back on YouTube!

I’ve finally managed to get the popular prequel fanedit, The Blackened Mantle, back on YouTube! Unfortunately, I had to remove some of John Williams’ score using YouTube’s “Remove Song” feature because Sony ID’d it and was blocking it in every country except Japan.

Information for ‘The Blackened Mantle’: https://letterboxd.com/film/star-wars-the-blackened-mantle

Some information by Darth Lunar (the editor of ‘The Blackened Mantle’): https://grimrukh.com/other-projects (ask him for a link)

Watch it on YouTube here - .

You mean, if they ever get finished, fingers crossed?

I am literally shocked at how well this edit worked for me. I was bawling like a baby at the end. The Japanese voice acting is so well done and the narrative changes are a revelation. I have never been so invested in Anakin’s character, nor have I ever been so convinced by his fall or felt the tragedy of his clash with Obi-Wan.

That said, this edit is a bit rough around the edges. Rough in terms of video quality, and inn terms of some of the edits. I really feel like if someone recreated this edit from scratch with blu-ray quality footage, smoother editing and a few minor story tweaks here and there (Some of the flashbacks like the Coruscant city chase run a little longer than they need to), I would never want to watch the prequels any other way.

Hell, I’d do it myself, but inserting and timing that many subtitles correctly sounds like a lot of work, and it’s something I haven’t really attempted before.

The Blackened Mantle is the only edit I’ve seen thus far which had me fully invested in the story. My only reservation about keeping it as my “definitive” prequel viewing option is how it’s so stylistically different from the saga, which ironically is what makes me like it so much. It’s a stupid reason, I know. But I want that base-level of continuity to be preserved in my collection.

Apart from that, The Blackened Mantle is perfect, and I can’t recommend it enough.

I’ve toyed with the idea of recreating it with my own color-graded sources and a few tweaks of my own…but I haven’t found the time yet.

So I’ve done some digging on the internet, and a found a copy of this edit that is better quality than the one available from the description in the youtube video linked in the OP. It’s still highly compressed, but it doesn’t have the weird framerate issues of that version and it’s a bit higher resolution. PM me if you’d like a link.

Thank god! PM Sent.

The Blackened Mantle is one of the best edits out there. The dialogue is so well written and it keeps you interested the entire way through. My only gripe is that the flashbacks just feel like I’m watching three different movies instead of one, it doesn’t work narratively at all. Anyway, check it out guys! It’s definitely worth the watch!

The one on YouTube is down but the BitChute one is still available.

Just finished it, really good. I was turned away before because of how much Episode 2 footage was kept, but it was used well to develop the characters.

I want something like this for the sequel trilogy!

Can I have a link?

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

Since I’m using this as the basis for one of the edits in my own SW film saga, I’m doing a full HD recreation of this edit as another training exercise right now actually. Hoping to end up with high-quality 1080p and maybe a 4K version of this by the time I’m done. Using 4K/5.1 rips of the films and not going to do any extra modding of that material other than cutting & fading/blending like Darth Lunar, so hopefully it works out!

Sorry; it’s still a WiP at the moment. But when it’s ready I will certainly do that!

So v1.0 of my BLACKENED MANTLE recreation (16GB 1080p mkv file with burned in subtitles) is finished and available for review via PM. I’ll probably do at least a 2.0 release with whatever fixes are needed from this version and selectable subtitle options, and I’m planning on throwing this up on a torrent as well at some point soon.
