hehehehehe

I have a "tape" of the Holiday Special Edition...

Oh boy!

I watched it at work one day with some fellow Star wars fans (who were unaware of it's existence), needless to say there was little laughing & mucho moaning & groaning about how unbelievably terrible it was!

Give me Pigs in Space featuring Luke Skywalker any day!

The Holiday Special is just a good example of everything that was WRONG with TV in the 70s.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Is the Star Wars Holiday Special similar to spaceballs.

If SWHS was as good as "Spaceballs", we'd all have watched it.

SWHS is basically a corny, low budget, boring and childish TV show that "rides" on the stellar popularity of the movie. If you can withstand 30min. of Wookiee growls, Mark just after the accident with a ton of makeup and Carrie doped & singing - see it at your own responsibility.

Who aired the Holiday Special and how was it advertised? Was this some huge deal on TV? Did it get high ratings? Because I honestly cannot remember a thing about this special ever having been on TV. Odds are that my parents and I did watch it and, if I were to see it again, I would probably have recall on repressed memories or somesuch. But for now, I'm living happily in the Land of Blissful Ignorance.

CBS in the States, CBC in Canada (if my 25-year-old memories are correct). I remember thinking the special itself sucked, but that the Nelvana cartoon was cool.

Was it heavily promoted or marketed? I mean, are there TV spots that might be found online somewhere as well as some cross marketing stuff like Christmas cards and whatnot?

I wish we could find those TV spots. Anyone with Kazaa want to look?

It's only saving grace was it offered the very 1st appearance of Boba Fett, albeit in cartoon form!

Can you specify what you consider wrong with 70s tv,there were some shows that were fun to watch like Adam12,Emergency,SWAT etc

As many shows as there were that were fun to watch in the 70s, there was much more painful dreck to sift through. For every SWAT and Emergency, there were at least 10 painful variety shows to sit through. Some of these were at the cusp of great comedy, and others, well...
What I mean when I say that the HS is symptomatic of everything that was wrong with TV in the 70s is that I can just picture the pitch meeting @ CBS. If I remember the events surrounding the HS correctly, CBS wanted to turn Star Wars into a weekly series, but GL said no. When asked if he would consider a TV special, he agreed. So here's CBS, trying to package a TV special, wondering which drug-addled, grade Z celebrities it can get, as well as who is under contractual obligation (read: Bea Arthur), as well as trying to appeal not only to kids, but to all ages. The mind reels...

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I can't imagine the mindset that occurs at meetings for all too many of these stupid TV shows both in the 70s and today. Can you imagine the pitch for The Simple Life? "Hey guys!! I've got it!!! Let's send that socialite bitch Paris and her I'm-only-cool-because-I'm-Paris'-friend Nicole to a farm and let hell ensue!!!"

Yes, the mind reels...
