Yeah, monthly donations ARE required. The site's admin has to donate a chunk of cash every month out of pocket to keep the thing running.

You on the other hand have the option to donate a small portion of money to support the gigs and gigs of content made available to you. If you miss a month here or there it's fine, you can still use the service. But the site's admin has to pay every month or the whole thing comes crashing down.
