Star Wars Canon EU (potential spoilers)

Author
Time

Being that I didn’t see a thread for this (at least in the last couple pages) I figured I’d start one to discuss opinions on any of the new eu/canon eu/whatever you want to call it. The “non-legends” material. Be it novels, comics, video games, what have you.

I just finished “Lost Stars” and found it extremely enjoyable. Relatable characters who you are instantly invested in and care for. After the disappointment that was “Aftermath” which I did not enjoy very much (it was slow, contrived, non-organic) I was hesitant to jump into another new canon novel, but was blown away at the quality storytelling and character development.

Feel free to discuss any opinions you have on any of the new canon material. I am certainly more interested in what it has to offer now.

I’ve only read Tarkin. It was enjoyable. Been meaning to read Lost Stars and Bloodline but it’ll probably be a while before I do.

I would like to read more Legends but It’s pretty hard to find any pre-PT stuff around here, and I don’t feel like ordering any of it online.

I’d like to read bloodline soon. I’ll be able to read about the planet Harloff Minor! Named after Collider Jedi Council host Kristian Harloff

I saw the interview with him and Claudia. Too bad she won’t be doing a Star Wars novel for some time but she is interested in doing a Lost Star sequel.

As it pertains to the nuEU in general I’m hoping we get another Vader and Palpatine novel. Hopefully something something that’s set shortly after ROTS…unless they make a Vader movie of course 😃

Is any of this new stuff other than Wendig’s mess written for adults? I think the above novels are YA.

Lords of The Sith is definitely for teens - adults. Also Tarkin is in no way YA…

Lost Stars was marketed as a YA, but honestly it is a totally enjoyable read for adults. It doesn’t FEEL like a YA novel. There’s sex and death and violence and stuff you wouldn’t normally find in a YA novel. I guess my point is that it doesn’t feel like you’re reading Twilight or Hunger Games or anything like that. It’s like the films, in that it is enjoyable by people of all ages. It really should have just been marketed as a straight novel, not as a YA novel.

Anyone read Bloodline? Is it even out yet? Looked pretty interesting.

It’s out and I haven’t had the chance even though I should

Reading Bloodline now. It certainly fleshes out the political landscape, which is something I found wanting in TFA. At least, upon first viewing.
I know it’s an opinion against the grain, but I like that about this book so far. It feels like the Cloak of Deception to TPM, The Approaching Storm to AOTC, or Labyrinth of Evil to ROTS, but centered around Leia. Perhaps we’ll get lead-in type novels in coming years from Luke and Han’s perspectives.

My stance on revising fan edits.

That seems to be the opinion of this reviewer as well.

I’ll give it a read.

Bloodline's waiting on my Kindle, I should be getting to that within the next few days. I didn’t hate Aftermath, but I didn’t love it either. Lords of the Sith was cool in the beginning but felt interminable by the end. I’ll agree with the consensus that Lost Stars is probably the strongest so far.

What did you feel about Dark Disciple or Tarkin?

I didn’t hate aftermath as much as most people. It just reminded me of the prequels in that it was a good story that was just not executed very well. Where good books suck me in and get me invested in the story so much that I kind of forget I’m reading a book, throughout aftermath I was very aware I was reading. Like it felt like I was reading Star Wars fan-fiction, rather than actually reading Star Wars. Lost stars felt like I was just reading Star Wars.

Not sure if that makes sense but it’s the best way I can describe it.

Anybody been following the comics? I had started reading the main Star Wars comic and the Vader comic back when they were getting started but just sort of stopped because they weren’t really holding my interest. Have they been getting better at all?

To be honest I haven’t been reading them as of late. The last ones I even enjoyed were Vader Down and the subsequent continuation of the storyline through the main Star Wars comic and the Darth Vader comics.

I enjoyed the Lando miniseries and found the Chewbacca miniseries passable.

The other comics I read (the Leia miniseries, the first three issues of the Vader series, Shattered Empire) were shit.

I disagree about the Vader comics being bad in the beginning but goddamn Shattered Empire was shit indeed. The only good one was the last issue and by then you don’t even want to read it.

Just got C-3PO. My first comic from the new canon. Excited to read it when I get the chance.

The comics have been seeming to get better as they go in my experience. I think they’re starting to find their footing now.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

END OF LINE

(It hasn’t happened yet)

I heard Vader is ending at #25. Probably for the best, since it’s consistently been spoiling the main Ongoing series because, except for the Vader Down crossover, it’s been a month ahead in-universe time. Vader is always complaining how the current Ongoing plot ended up when Ongoing is halfway through it.

I’ve been trying to keep up with all the canon. Haven’t grabbed “Bloodlines” or “Dark Disciple” yet and couldn’t finish “Heir to the Jedi” (it’s just so bad, and it definitely feels like exactly what it is, a book that was finished before the EU Purge and they felt bad for scrapping).

I’m a couple months behind on comics. I’ve been pretty broke lately so they’ve been piling up in my box. Anyone read the Poe Dameron one yet?
