Also, if you use the SSE extra as a source, you have to recreate the final frame because it is missing. That was the other big obstacle I ran into, but I was just going to create that single frame in photoshop once the rest was done using a high quality source, probably the SSE it self to closer match in quality and color.

Here’s a new hybrid version for you:

https://we.tl/ZSo7zbwdMi

SSE sourced Fox / Lucasfilm / Longtime ago, Eastman Star Wars Logo and Crawl but this time with Darth Lucas’ starfield behind it, my own custom pan down using his starfields (not perfectly animated I’ll admit, but not too bad), then Darth Lucas’ Flyover. A little grain has been added to make it fit with the SSE a little better… Presented as visually “lossless” MP4 (sorry - no audio), Starfield Pan down .PSD included.

Pretty good! The only distracting thing (aside from the ‘box’ I was talking about before) is that the grain on the planet is frozen until the pan is done, and then you see it start all of a sudden.

The crawl looks great. I thought I would just point out a minor detail. (I could not find anyone else mentioning it in this thread.) For the pan down, the star field is moved with a nodal pan, meaning the camera stays in one place and just tilts while looking at a flat surface, while the planet and moons seem to be aligned to the overall movement of the shot. This causes the stars to move in a warped path in relation to the planets. A bit more information on this can be found in the Legacy Edition archive website.

Does anyone else see “ghosting” (not sure if that’s the proper term) of the crawl that is visible before the real crawl as the crawl moves on?

Yeah, I see that too. I fixed the grain problem, but clearly it needs a little more work…

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet, but the Star Destroyer compositing is from the 77 version. It was redone when the crawl was redone, so there is no matte line on the planet in the 81.

I took some time and created a better starfield. I was able to retrieve the brightest stars from the 81 crawl that TN1 included with the SSE. The medium stars are from the TR46 LD preservation of the DE. I included a diffuse field of stars in the background that were the result of some filtering I tried to do that failed, but it did produce a field of very dim stars. I was trying to filter the dimmest stars from the Grindhouse TESB opening crawl. I pulled the planet and moons from an overly of the SSE and the BR (the moons and planets lined up perfectly - so did the stars but I filtered them out). The did not line up perfectly with the 81 crawl. I had to resize each one individually. I cropped the image to to the SSE planet. That is a fair match to the cropping in TR47. I usually work with layers and this one has 4 visible and some other reference layers (such as the full TR47 starfield. I would have used the JSC or the OUTRules, but both share the JSC cropping of the image. I opted for the most complete starfield I could find. Next up, the running background plate for the crawl and flyover.

That looks great. While I have no idea what the star positions are supposed to look like, it’s the most seamless and consistent version I’ve seen of it.

I think the bottom left corner was strangely blank in DL’s, but I didn’t know if that was incorrect. Looks like yours does have stars there.

That looks really great. Would you mind if I used it in my version?

The bottom left corner was a place where I couldn’t find a match in Empire, so I painted the stars in from a laserdisc reference, which only had the brightest stars visible.

Yotsuya has inspired me to assemble the 1977 Opening Starfield, basing it mainly on the DeEd versions. I believe it to be complete, but invite any opinions or critiques:

Ok I’ve pretty much finished the next version. Starfield is a bit more consistent now, I used yotsuya’s starfield and TN1’S clip as reference to shift some things around and make sure the moon and planet’s position’s were correct. The matte line has been removed (I thought I had already done this, but I guess that work wasn’t saved or something). All that’s left to do is add some 35mm grain over the beginning portion to fix the issue with the static grain.

It’s been a bit quiet here, what’s happening on this side of ot.com?

I’ve been working on an updated 81 crawl which is just about finished. Just trying to find a 35mm grain element that actually works properly in after effects (all previous elements I’ve used just show up as just a blank, green screen even though they play find in QuickTime).

Once I have that all sorted out its just a matter of editing it into the film and then plugging away in encore to finish the disc.

Okay I found a 35mm grain element that actually works within after effects. The grain was a bit to fine to match up with the grain where the splice is, so I enlarged it until it looked close. You can still see the static grain if you’re looking for it, but it doesn’t stand out as much now.

I am rendering now. I’ll take a look once it’s rendered to make sure nothing jumps out at me, and then I’ll upload it to google drive and post a link here.

Ok, there was an issue with the encode that I have since solved. I am uploading the file to drive now.

Wow, just wow. Great project you have back there in your Taun-Taun Darth!, I think you need to tweak the colors a bit more on the 35mm to blend in with your version.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. The only 35mm footage is less than a second at the end of the Star Wars logo recede. And that already was color corrected to match.
