Towne32 has said before that he likes the colors of empire and Jedi and thinks their damn near perfect so I doubt he’d be jumping to cc them.

Just had a chance to check out the new v2.7 and it is a BIG improvement on v2.5 colourwise. Some of the fleshtones in certain scenes are still too red for my liking but the overall improvement is pretty staggering. Great job towne32!

Do you have any plans to work on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi Despecialized Editions?

Thanks KK.

Regarding the other two films: I think the color on ESB 2.0 is my favorite color grading of any version of a Star Wars film available to the public. Could use a few tweaks, like in the 97SE footage, but I really hope 2.5 and 3.0 stay extremely close to 2.0. Part of the motivation to do what became 2.7 was to get a version that’s a little more natural looking, and less experimental, to round out the Trilogy next to the very impressive ESB 2.0. I’m relatively indifferent to the “controversy” of whether the earlier Hoth shots should be bluer or whiter, and I’ll settle for anything that’s not crazy. I’m also fairly open minded about the interior Cloud City shots, where no one seems to know if they should be warm or cool. If an answer ever comes about, then so be it.

In Jedi, there are a couple things I toyed around with changing, as I had done some grading of the BD previously. But in looking at 2.5, I found that I preferred the vast majority of scenes to any other versions available. Sometimes the 35mm needs to compromise with the surrounding BD footage, making them compatible with neither being perfect. I think the early Sarlacc scene desert shots are a little bit green, but other sources are way too blue there. I think the only way I would consider working on Jedi for would be if another Rancor 35mm source became available that could replace the deep dark blue shots with ones that match the rest of the scene. That’s the main thing the film could use.

I realize how hypocritical it is to say that I think we all obsess a little too much about the color. That’s not to say that all of the projects relating to it aren’t great and worthwhile. But there will always be room for improvement, and it’s worth asking ourselves whether we’ll always be too critical to enjoy the films.

Besides, 2.7 was given to Towne32 since Harmy had done most of the pre-3.0 work he was going to do on SW, with ESB Harmy is still actively working on bumping it to what should be the last pre-3.0 version, and ROTJ was a very recent product (that is, his work has been getting better with time, and SW was, by far, the oldest project of the bunch and was more open to some improvements). At this point, once ESB versions up to match the style (lack of GOUT) of the rest of the films, it is all v3.0+ from here out.

That’s the tldr of my last post, yep. 😃 Empire is fantastic, Jedi looks good enough that it’s better than SW 2.7 and my mucking about would have more negative effects than positive. 😃

Is there a MD5 value available for this 2.7 release?

The Empire Strikes Back is actually the one that I felt had the largest room for improvement of the two. Go figure. The Star Wars Original Trilogy has and has always had a real way of dividing opinion when it comes to how it should look. I think ten years from now we’ll still be debating what these films should look like.

Honestly i’m so glad to have finished working on the Star Wars Original Trilogy films. All those years working on them definately did drain my enthusiasm for the OT, its only slowly starting to come back now. I’ve done enough obsessing over the colours of the OT to last me a lifetime, i’m very happy to leave it to DrDre and others now.

Yeah, that’s the other reason I’m not doing those two. They’re still watchable to me, whereas the first currently is not.

Personally I look at it a little differently. I don’t mind that much, if an official release has a somewhat different grading than the theatrical release. To a certain extend it’s inevitable given the limitations of the color space used. What’s more important to me is, that it’s a good color grading, that is “faithful” to the era, with natural skin tones, and a nice color dynamic. If that’s the case, I will enjoy the release just fine.

Of course I’m still curious, what the original film looked like. It’s interesting to discuss, and to try to come up with ways to estimate what the colors should be.

Just type Harmy in the search bar and hit enter. Protip: if noone posted in a thread for the last week, it’s probably not the one you’re looking for.

Protip: There’s only one thread posted by ‘Jipp’ (Harmy) over there. Look for ‘Jipp’ and you’ve found what you’re looking for. Do this first of course: (Just type Harmy in the search bar and hit enter.)

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

I’m just half way in v2.7 but it’s looks great so far. Even my wife (means a no too video techy person) sees the difference and enjoys it 😊
I will be back with my toughts after my first watch through.
