If that’s the case, then I was right, this is Fox pumping as much money from physical distribution without having to spend any money before they lose the rights to (most of) them. I’m not sure LFL can stop them though, they literally don’t have the rights to (see also: the October 2015 Blu-ray releases of the original saga still saying “THE COMPLETE SAGA” in defiance of that no longer being the case).

If Fox and Disney get into a whizzing contest over something like this, it’s not good for anyone.

Technically that was the case as of October 2015. Now though, no longer.

Fox knew what they were doing. Putting out the same discs 4 years later at the same time Disney/LFL is releasing digital versions of 1-3 & 5-6 to lead into 7 with that title is defiance. I think Fox is indeed getting into a pissing contest to see how far they can push Disney/LFL because they didn’t get the offer to buy the franchise. The only good that can come of this is by some miracle Fox releasing the theatrical cut of “Star Wars”, but that would just be to piss Disney/LFL off more.

That would depend on what Fox has sitting in their own vaults?

Well if it is said pissing contest, they could throw together a shitty 2k scan of some prints or IPs together and DNR the hell out of them.

I emailed my local (well, most local) Alamo and this was the response i got:

[…]
It has definitely NOT been cancelled. Our corporate offices are currently preparing web posts with updated information about the show. […] Due to slightly bizarre screening legalities, the STAR WARS films cannot be played at primary movie-screening venues like the Alamo so that’s why we are forced to think a bit outside the box on this one.

Tickets will go on sale sometime on May 4; we don’t have an exact time pinned down for that quite yet.

When we know more specifics, we’ll be sure to let everyone know. But it’s still moving forward, so fear not! For that is the path to the Dark Side. 😉

Did I miss a post this was responding to, saying the screenings are cancelled?
Because that is what I found out today.

I was going to post in this thread earlier because I work for a (non-Alamo) theater, and we were set to screen all of the films.
The story is Lucasfilm said no when they heard Fox has ok’d these screenings (apparently without consent from Lucasfilm).
How it is even possible to make a “mistake” at that level, no one knows.
Again, my theater isn’t part of Alamo. However, we absolutely obtained the right to screen the films through the appropriate channels (the only channel). Only they didn’t check first with Lucasfilm??

Sorry to be bearer of bad news, but I doubt anyone - including Alamo chain - is going to be screening the films.

Well i think there is way too much “i think” type of commenting going on, thats why i contacted Alamo directly. (I guess you may have a better insight than some as you work at a movie theater, but you are still just reporting hearsay) Until i hear otherwise, i am going to assume that they are still trying to find a way to screen this. That is why they are picking non-movie theater locations.

Harmy did it alone, why couldn’t Fox?

I’m not saying they couldn’t do it. But who actually knows what they’ve held onto over the decades? Lucasfilm seems to have nearly everything in their own archives. The original film is the only one Fox really has any rights to at this point.

I want to be excited for this, but I just can’t. Watching the special editions is like reliving the last 10 years of abuse we’ve gotten from Lucas.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

As others have posted here, does Disney actually have the ability to prevent Fox from screening anything? Now that Alamo has confirmed that they will indeed be screening the films, perhaps the following is more likely:

Disney hears about the screening, says to Fox, “Hey, you’re distributing the OT to Alamo this summer? We have some new masters that may or may not be ready in time. Could you imagine how many more tickets y’all will be able to sell if you market the OUT??? This will also help us market the Blu Ray in the fall, and Rogue One. Let’s help each other out.”

Fox: “Yeah, we’ll pause this for a little while. As you know, we’ve been blatantly trying to beat as much money out of this franchise as humanly possible while we can still scrape 6% off the top.”

This would also still be consistent with the notion expressed by Tomland’s source that a lack of initial communication between Fox and Disney was somehow involved in the confusion behind the screening.

Plus we have this:

Rare? The OT was last available in theaters last December.

Not on 35mm. Plus I think that was even more limited than this.

I don’t think it was. Even Regal was showing it.

Really? Huh, it wasn’t in my area.

yeah, theaters near me showed all 6 films in the lead up to TFA. if Alamo wants to call this rare, they are either pathetically misinformed, or it needs to be something like the 97SE which hasn’t been seen in quite some time.

It wasn’t every Regal. I believe there was only one in Oregon (my state) that was showing it. I didn’t go because I didn’t want to do a 7 film marathon. Instead, I stayed home and marathoned the OUT and then saw TFA later that night.

The Star Wars Trilogy has held the top three spots for films I want to see in a theater (others in that illustrious group include the 2010 restoration of Metropolis, Blade Runner, Aliens, Superman the Movie) At this point I would even go see the 1997 SE, because all the real stupid shit didn’t go down until the 2004 release, that was the first time the theatricals and the SEs weren’t on an even playing field quality wise.

If they do release the OOT, how about a punching bag with Lucas’ face on it in the lobby so each fan can thank him as they go see the suppressed classics he tried to bury in favor of the mediocre meddlings of middle age?

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

You’re not the first person to say something along these lines but I must say I just don’t get it.

All of the really stupid shit was there from the start (Jabba, Greedo [both of which got better in later versions], ronto and other Mos Eisley shenanigans, Luke screaming [removed later] ESB star destroyer bs, Jedi effing Rocks, sarlacc, etc.).

All 2004 added was new Emperor, new Boba, and new Hayden. Buuuut who really cares about new Emperor (some might call it an improvement), new Boba is pretty much the same as old Boba (I know I’ll get shit for this but it’s true), and Hayden is weird and doesn’t make sense but Shaw never made sense either.

People hate 2004 because it adds PT elements and everyone hates the PT. Buuuut they’re really nothing compared to the stain that the original SE left.

I agree that in the grand scheme of things 04 isn’t any worse than 1997’s incarnation, but I would say that the changes made in 2004 and 2011 were just as bad as the 1997 changes.
