If you could only remove one Special Edition change...?

In the opposite scenario of this thread, let’s say Disney cannot release the OUT, because of a contract clause or some bs, but they are allowed to remove one SE change, which change would you be the most offended by if they kept if this situation were real?

As much as I hate the prequel retcons (Hayden’s ghost, the godawful Emperor portrayal in later Empire releases), It has to be Greedo shooting.

Four way tie between Greedo shooting first, Hayden’s Ghost, Vader’s ‘Noooo’, and Jedi Rocks. If I must pick one then I’ll just be biased and say Greedo shooting first.

  • Lapti Neck and Jedi Rocks are both terrible songs. Lucas should have deleted the song instead of substituting another terrible song. If I could make any change to the original trilogy, it would be to remove the song altogether.

Changed my mind: I’d undo replacing Star Wars in the saga with a shitty movie called Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

I mean, the SE of SW is practically a different movie so I think I can get away with this.

Actually nah throw me with the Hayden ghost crowd. As pointless as Greedo shooting first is, ghost Hayden is way more pointless.

I wouldn’t buy this release. There’s too much that’s wrong with it for me to be satisfied with the removal of any one change. I’d have to go with the addition of Jabba into the first film as being the most egregious change, so that would go.

Star Wars: the CG “humor” in Mos Eisley.
ESB: The 04 Emperor. I wouldn’t mind it as much had they kept the original dialogue.
ROTJ: Jedi Rocks. This just plain makes me want to gouge my eyes out and shove them into my ears.

  • Given how much you love AOTC, do you also love the recycled Sebulba model from the Corooskant chase scene?

I can’t chose just one. The most unbearable changes are

  • the new colour grading (I refuse to call it colour correction) of all 3 movies
  • new OB1 scream
  • CG creatures at Most Eisley
  • Greedo shooting first
  • the dumb boring added scene where Vader gets the shuttle, flies with it to the Star Destroyer, and then lands with it in a deleted scene from ROTJ
  • new “everybody fights the Empire” sequences at the end of ROTJ
  • “Nooooooooooooooooooooooo”
  • Hayden ghost

What about Jedi Rocks?

I’d probably go with that or the Jabba scene, because no matter how much scenes like Han shooting second and force ghost Anakin ruin the characters, at least they are short while Jedi Rocks and Jabba at the Falcon are rather long. The Jabba scene basically being a rehash of the Greedo scene ruins the pacing and Jedi Rocks makes me cringe, so they affect my viewing experience more directly than other changes that ruin the movies only by implication.
Nevertheless, I wouldn’t want to watch that version, either.

Everyone picking more than one thing is missing the point of the thread.

Well, listing all of your least favorite changes is probably an extremely novel idea for a thread on this site too. Don’t think I’ve seen that before.

Jedi Rocks. Much as there are other changes in the movies that annoy me like crazy, nothing else comes close to being as embarrassingly out of place as that music number. So if I could only remove one single SE change, that would be it.

Hayden from 2004 version and I would be happy with it.

Nah, not a fan of it at all. It is just that the original scene is about as embarrassing as the new one. So I don’t care which one I have to endure.

Jedi Rocks, by far. I could forgive the Hayden ghost because at the time I thought my memory was playing tricks on me, but Jedi Rocks - no, that’s just - that’s too much.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

I don’t know if I hate Jedi Rocks or CGI sarlacc more.
Jedi Rocks is dumb and more intrusive but ultimately that whole scene is full of silly nonsense anyway, but a huge moment of tension (sarlacc) is completely ruined by the dodgy CG effects.

I’d take Jabba out of the first movie. His reveal in ROTJ is awesome.

Alternatively, I’d remove Greedo having shot at all. Han shot first, dammit.

I disagree in this case. Yeah, Lapti Nek is cheesy, but in a sleazy 80’s way that’s easy to forgive, and fits in well with the atmosphere of Jabba’s palace. Jedi Rocks is cheesy in an uncomfortable 90’s way. I feel embarrassed every time I see it.

In addition to adding a sleazy atmosphere, which you noted, Lapti Nek was written by John Williams. The new one was not if I recall correctly. Also Lapti Nek is consistent with the 80s, and like it or not, ROTJ is an 80s film.

Jar-Jar is the Emperor in the extra special edition of ROTJ (scenes 1, 3, and then 6 to the end).

Well put. Agreed 100%
