What was your first reaction to Vader's "Noooo" in ROTJ?

What was your reaction when you first heard Darth Vader say "Nooooo" in the Return of the Jedi Blu-Ray?

Author

Whhhyyy??? Five years later we still don’t have an answer.

“What. Why? No seriously, why is this a thing?!”
I’m paraphrasing of course, but I do remember my initial reaction being just… baffled at the fact that they would even do this.

It really had the feel of George just putting his foot down and saying ‘this is for me. you can’t tell me what to do’. Same as ‘weesa free’ in that regard. It was the most ridiculed moment of RoTS, a film which was relatively well enjoyed by the public. And he carried it over to RoTJ because he can, and because it fits his revisionist narrative of the entire saga being about Vader’s redemption.

More angry than Han shooting first.
More angry than CG Jabba.
More angry than Weesa Free.
Less angry than Hayden retcon.

I only heard discussions about the “Nooo” but never actually heard the change itself. I was completely baffled by the outrage–I really couldn’t understand what was so objectionable about making a change to an already thoroughly ruined film. It’s like Lucas took a dump on everyone’s kitchen tables, and then 14 years later people were suddenly outraged, but only because he didn’t wash his hands afterward. I still don’t see what the big deal about the “Nooo” is. Vader could’ve yelled “Put the bunny back in the box” in an awful fake southern drawl and it’s not like the previous two hours of the Special Edition would’ve suddenly gotten any more watchable.

It wasn’t until I was working on the Thai dub that I heard the Thai version. It was really weird–they had a different actor doing the voice, it had a different tone like it was spliced in from a totally different audio source, and it just made no sense at all in context. So having heard the Thai version (where I removed that line, of course, so nobody else ever has to hear it), I think they captured the essence of the English version perfectly, and now I have even less need to hear the English version.

That’s pretty much what the English version sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3u70WELSEg

Lucas must think we’re morons if he saw the need to add the line to explain what’s going on.

Literally cringed.
I actually burst out laughing when I heard Obi-Wan’s new screech though.

Both of those changes were mindbogglingly stupid. Absolutely the stuff of hoaxes.
I just rolled my eyes, because it’s not like the BluRays were ever going to be something I would ever actually watch.

I can suffer the BD versions of ANH and ESB on occasion if I’m really bored, but I seriously can’t watch the BD version of ROTJ, it’s a nightmare.

I watched the BD of ESB the other day (kind of, I had it on while I listened to the commentary track I’ve never bothered with before, and occasionally watched). It’s not really anything I’d be opposed to if they weren’t suppressing the original, and were instead including it as a bonus disc of the Enhanced 20th Anniversary Special Edition. Though the shuttle part was silly, and I got the reminder of how awful a job they did on Ian’s RoTS makeup.

R2 rocks aside, I would say ANH has had reasonable changes (if one accepts changes) since 1997. But it’s still unwatchable if you don’t like dated CGI creatures, which ESB was free of. Even if you do like that stuff, the ANH color really looks awful. Much worse than the other two films.

I’m sure if I looked hard enough, you’d read my reaction right here on this forum. I don’t recall exactly what it was, but I remember feeling like “this is it, Lucas is just adding things to get a rise out of us now.”

I like to think of it this way:

'97 SE’s: attempt to update films to match and/or expand original vision, test digital waters before going through with PT

'04 DVDs: attempt to tie OT better with PT

'11 BDs: Piss fans off as much as possible

At least they succeded with one attempt

I’d say the '04 attempt wasn’t a complete failure.
I mean as a whole final product it was, but a case could be made that visually it does tie in with the PT more… Sorta… Maybe…

Except for Greedo shooting, of course.

My first reaction was, in addition to the obvious (complete butchery of a classic), what disrespect to John Williams. He wrote the music without that line in mind. He climaxed the music over that piece of footage. They just ruined his entire musical sequence by dubbing “Noooooo” over it.

It showed a basic lack of understanding with regards to filmmaking.

You’ll have to add me to the missed joke thread in off-topic. Don’t get it!
