nice to know they aren’t going after despecialized downloaders as long as is its not for money.

The despecialized editions is a silver lining to all this of course, but it seems like a lot of computer work for the average person.

At least Harmy asks people to buy the official release first.

Eh, screw the average person. I got mine, Jack.

To a degree, this is a discussion I havent contributed much to lately cause frankly what more is there to add?? All I can say is I wont raise hope til I hear something official. Is that to say I think it’ll never happen?? No but the fact is its not our place to say. We’re just fans. Do I want it happen?? Hell yeah! But I cant give a valid argument on it happening until I get something official in the news on the subject. A ‘person familiar on the subject’ does not answer the question. Anonymity only lessens credibility further. If it says something like 'Kathleen Kennedy says ‘Original Star wars will/won’t be restored’ then maybe I’ll buy it. Until then not much I can add because I dont wanna get my hopes up or speculate to much. I guess I’ll just use the cliche but truthful ‘never say never’.

I refuse to buy the Blu-Ray “Complete Saga” and give money to Lucasfilm for treating me like shit. I would buy the Theatrical Trilogy first day like I did with The Force Awakens. I would love Harmy’s versions burned onto discs, but I will not compromise on my stance and throw away money on something I despise.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Do what I did. Buy them used on Ebay. (You can find the individual discs being sold for between 10-12 bucks each.) Problem solved!

I’m still keeping my chin up and hope for the day (or next year) we get the OUT (and the theatrical versions of the prequels) on Blu-ray and remastered DVD. Maybe Lucasfilm is keeping us in the dark.

Besides, John Landis said 4K restorations of the OUT are being planned so…

This whole thing hurts my brain!

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

I too am hoping that one day we will have both the Original Unaltered Trilogy(OUT) and the Prequel Unaltered Trilogy(PUT). I hope that all of them are restored in 4K with the correct Colors and Contrast as well.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Remastering the Prequels in 4K? I don’t really see the point since Ep. II & III were shot on 1080p video.

If it’s not next year - and I’m not holding my breath* - I fully expect 2020 for an official announcement of some kind, even if it’s just them saying “here’s why we still haven’t restored the theatrical versions.” The elephant in the room will have outgrown the room by that point.

It’s bad enough that the 2004 Lowry master is still the official version that’s being trotted out, just with the additional 2011 updates. Like Zombie said in his article on SSW, they can’t even get the SE right.

2020 will be a significant year for the OT for a number of reasons.

Since the ST will most likely be done by then, the folks at Lucasfilm will be scrambling to keep the well from drying up. That only means a better chance of them finally rolling out what they’ve been keeping in their back pocket for all these years.

By that point the new 4K UHD blu-Ray format will have reached a much wider market and the time will have come to remaster these films yet again. I can’t see the OOT ever being considered the “canon” version of these films, but I could see Kathleen Kennedy bringing George in to consult on a “final” version of I-VI. Maybe she could also get his blessing about finally remastering the original versions as well.**

Most notably of all, the distribution rights to all of the films (except ANH) will fully revert to Lucasfilm in 2020. There are two possibilities here. Either Fox will try to make a deal with Disney to get a snazzy new blu-Ray collection on the store shelves by 2019 or Disney will just continue to sit on it until they get the rights back in 2020. Disney would still need to make a deal with Fox over ANH, but it will be a formality by that point.

I also can’t help but wonder what the plans are for the 3D version of the OT. We know they’ve already converted the PT, so I see the OT following suit at some point. I really wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what the footage from RMW’s demo reel was all about. Maybe Lucasfilm just needed a fresh scan of the negatives as a starting point for the conversion job.

ETA: Add me to the list of people who actually want the theatrical cuts of the prequels.

*Seriously, how bad of a sign is it that we’ve heard nothing on the subject from Lucasfilm in the almost four years since they were bought by Disney? If the blu-Ray release of TFA has come and gone without an update on the status of the OOT, I’m not expecting the 40th anniversary to bring any updates either.

**I wouldn’t completely dismiss these rumors that people at Fox feel uncomfortable about putting out a remastered OOT while George is still alive.

Fox essentially owns the original film, and George dumped them to get hitched to a mouse. Why would they worry about upsetting him now?

Early UHD releases are already littered with 4K upscales, what’s two more? I’m amazed how many people are all atwitter over 4K, when a lot of films are finished at 2K.

Very good point. Apparently Disney feels the same way about him since they dumped his animated film about Electric Light Orchestra called Strange Magic.

Yeah, they could have advertised it a little more? I liked it more than Frozen. Damn thing isn’t even on Blu Ray.

817p actually. To make sure that they kept the traditional 2.35 aspect ratio Star Wars is known for, they hard cropped the 16x9 image.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I felt bad for George. They really through the whole film under the bus. I think the fact that they did that to his final film really shows that they wouldn’t consider his feelings about releasing the OT in its original form. Especially given that I don’t think he cares about those anymore.

I’ve never seen Strange Magic, but it does seem weird that it got zero support from Disney. Also as Silverwook mentioned, it’s inconceivable to me that a movie, especially a CGI animated movie, would not get released on blu ray in this day and age.

It does make me wonder, though, since George is such a great businessman… when he sold Lucasfilm, why didn’t he negotiate to make sure Strange Magic was supported?

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

He may have just assumed that Disney would give it some type of marketing. After all, that is a reasonable assumption. Remember though, when discussing a 4 billion dollar deal, Strange Magic was probably the last thing on anyone’s minds.

If the rumors of ghost Hayden being in Episode 8 are true, then all chance of an OOT release outside of bonus material in the vein of the '06 DVDs is gone.
At the end of the day the average consumer doesn’t care anyway, and that’s all that matters to Disney/Lucasfilm.

I couldn’t care less wether Lucasfilm sees the OOT as canon or bonus material as long as they release it in adequate quality.

Well, if they want Darth Vader/Anakin in Ep 8, who would they choose to play him other than Hayden? It’s either him, or some new guy we have no connection to.

I don’t have any idea how these two things are connected.
