*YOU’RE

Also, is there no life support in the super futuristic Star Wars past? I mean, seriously.

*YOU’RE

THATS THE JOKE

(although I’ll admit to accidentally using “YOURE” the second time when I meant to use “YOUR”)

Trying to interpret why “‘other’” is in quotes is getting me way ahead of myself.

It means that he has already restored both the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Not funny.

I thought it was funny. Partly because the “other” project I’m on nearly HAS given me a heart-attack. 😃

Legacy is slowly moving up the chain. Executives are nervous, skittish creatures.

I have it on good authority that Mike’s ‘other’ project was the recently completed “Godzilla versus Mecha-Barney” film that was recently put in the can…I can only imagine the ulcers from working on that…

There is a part of me that would LOVE to see that movie, if only because we know that Godzilla always kills the other monster at the end of the film. Watching a purple singing dino in pink armor die would be epic.

The videos on vimeo are very interesting. What bothers me a bit is that the yellow tinting of the Tatooine shots is removed completely. I’m quite confident that the sky is not meant to look as blue as it does in the restauration…

Well, the yellow tint seems to be very specific to the Technicolor print that Mike is using as a basis, or probably Technicolor prints in general. I developed an algorithm to retrieve the colors from faded prints, and applied it to the raw scan of the SSE, and it shows absolutely no evidence of a pronounced yellow tint, and the Tatooine sky is really quite blue:

Interesting, but even the bluest skies in your screenshots are not as blue as Mike’s but still have a light yellow tint.

Mike states many times in the Vimeo videos the final coloring, etc won’t be complete until the entire restoration is complete. We haven’t seen the finished product yet.

However, he also makes it clear no one has seen this quality a version outside of the folks who made the movie. The final version likely will look a bit “new” to all of us.

His son has seen the finished product. He’s probably the only kid his age in the world to have seen the original version of Star Wars in a theater.

Nah, all my kids have seen Star Wars from prints in the cinema a few times, and most of their friends came with them.

Wow. This thread just ruined all the other SW projects for me. Why did I look?

^ Very Much This.

I’ve been a fan of Adywan and Harmy’s work for a few short years, and then recently I came poking around these forums to find out more info about TN1’s project. After having gone through a majority of this thread (and other key threads) in the course of 2 days, I now have a clearer picture of the landscape of fan-based restorations for Star Wars, as well as the current events. I’m quite pleased to hear about the prospect of the eventual meetings with those “up the chain”. I’m totally blown away by the amount of work put into Star Wars Legacy, and certainly the results (based on what’s been shared with us). These days are quite an exciting time, and it’s also great to see the sharing and collaboration that happens amidst these highly personal projects.

Mike, I’ll join the others here by saying thanks for your hard work, and for sharing your journey with the folks of the internets. Your vimeo videos were a treat (I especially appreciated the X-Wing Flyby 1 & VFX Breakdown).

And as a father of 2 little boys, I really enjoyed reading about your private screening last year - well done, sir!

In reference to Legacy, I quote M in YOLT: “this is the big one 007.”

Mike’s efforts and sheer dedication to the cause, not to mention the financial realities of doing such work on your own, is incredible.

The hope I think would be to build a greater degree of credibility with those in charge at Disney/LFL and to give them an eye opener into what exactly all this means. Not to mention that we’re quite dedicated and serious-not silly folks on an online forum. Legacy and Mike’s pitch is just the way to do this. And it is the pitch that counts just like everything in the business.

Best of luck to you Mike, we’re all rooting for you, and if it comes to pass I’d volunteer to help the team in any way possible.

Also I wanted to note that the the big difference between Legacy and our own efforts is that Legacy is really being done the way any true film restoration should be: by using the best source available and comparing against the stock used, production technicalities and hardships, number of prints off the negative and perhaps most neglected is comparing against all the print types used and accurately finding the ideal image intended and shot originally.

It is my sincerest hope that the Legacy pitch does work and then a real 4K or better scan is performed of the negatives…and then properly done with all audio mixes (now archived at LFL), with Mike and perhaps involving some of us in some kind of temp consultants role. With the current social media age it might even make for good PR to involve some OTers to assist in any way.

My only real suggestion would be to maybe think about writing Robert Harris via the home heater forum since he has already expressed interest in restoring the trilogy and would at least be a helpful industry resource.

Quite an odd place to talk about Star Wars restorations, don’t you think? 😉
