Any chance of an MKV as well?

Worst-case Ontario, you can use MakeMKV to create your own MKV file.

Forgive me if I overlooked this, but what are the changes/upgrades for this version?

Fully GOUT Sync’d

Oh, OK, very cool indeed. Look forward to it. One more question though, I keep seeing “GOUT synced” all over the place. Why is this so important? I know what the GOUT is, but why is its audio so coveted?
When is this version due?

The GOUT audio isn’t important, it’s a standard for synchronization purposes, and contains all known frames, I think. So if you sync your video to it, you can use any of the many tracks available.

Gotcha. Now I understand. It’s a reference standard.

Have the lasers which were accidentally removed in the cleanup been restored?

No, I didn’t even know about that until a couple of days ago, and by then the video was all encoded. I did confirm that the lasers are there in the original frames, and will make sure that if there is another version (probably from Poita’s Scan) that they will be restored, but I’m not going to waste a couple of days just to put back in a single laser bolt that is visible only for a single frame, and which you won’t miss when it’s gone even if you know it should have been there. If YOU want to restore it after you download 1.5, by all means do so.

I did restore the technician’s leg in the very first frame of Reel 6, which had also been cleaned up accidentally in version 1.0, though nobody seems to have noticed that one yet. I only fixed this because I happened to see it while GOUT syncing the reel changes.

I did actually scan through most of the film and perform additional clean up, but it’s considerably more difficult to spot things that are missing, unless they are also on adjacent frames. Anyway, my point is that there are probably thousands of clean up errors like this throughout the entire film. We cleaned as much of it as possible, by hand, frame by frame, but we’re only human. The task was monumental, and tedious, and sometimes mistakes were made or shortcuts taken. (This isn’t Legacy Edition, kids, but hey, at least you get to watch this one.) At 23.976 fps, almost none of these little things are visible, but go frame by frame, especially in a split screen with another source, and you’ll probably find a lot of things that were accidentally removed and a whole bunch of other little pieces of dirt that are still there.

This does indeed read like it is going to be a very desirable source to have, and thanks to all, for performing this monumental task!

Is there a certain date that you are looking at to introduce the video?

I care.

@Darth Mallwalker: Sorry I guess I missed that one! Makes sense though - anyone trying to GOUT sync it would spot it. One thing I noticed and maybe you noticed too, was that whoever was chopping the print up for plattering, would usually keep the first and last frame of each reel (presumably lopping them off with the Head/Tail). Over time, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th - 20th frames of the reel became ratty and were removed, which left us with, for example in Reel 6, the first frame, then 2 or 3 missing frames, and then the rest of the reel. This is why the leg got removed, whether the cleanup was automated or manual, when the software took pixels from the next available frame, the leg just wasn’t there anymore. However, I went back to the uncleaned frame and put the leg back in and was then able to use the “Fix Frame” Effect to re-create the missing frames through interpolation of the motion between the first frame and the next available frame. So, Reel 6 is now complete. In fact, I was able to do the same thing at most of the Reel changes so all of the frames should now be present and correct.

As I mentioned previously, there should not have been any missing frames apart from at the reel changes. Now that I have the master project files used to create v1.0 I can see what happened. There was an attempt to GOUT sync v1.0, but the GOUT Source being used was missing all those frames, so (rather ironically) in order to maintain the sync they were removed from the SSE. I was able to simply put them back in.

Williarob…you have a PM

Also, can someone tell me, or point me to the Reel Times? I know where Reel 1 quits at, but not the others.

Fully authored Custom Blu-ray (BD50 - you’re welcome) with Seamless Branching, menus, correct Chapter stops, and subtitle options…

Awesome!
What program did you use to author the disc?

Very excited to see the new version. I looked at v. 1.0 last night for the first time since the week it came out, and it was much better than I remembered it being. For some reason the flaws were the only things that stayed in my mind, but watching it again they didn’t dominate the experience like I’d thought at first. If a lot of those issues are getting fixed, I could see this becoming my go-to version. Williarob, is there anything to be done at this stage about the weird bleeding effect that goes on with the pill lights on the Death Star and in a few other places, or is that going to be there until you get Poita’s scan?

Yeah, I’m seriously down for a copy as well, give us a heads up when you know it will be available. Thanks for everything.

Oh, if it is GOUT synced, will the BD include the hairy_hen DTS-HD MA 5.1 track?

Even if it doesn’t, you could easily mux it using tsmuxer and DED.

He said it will be using seamless branching, so there’s no way to insert any audio or subtitle and keep the branching.

When using TsMuxer you will have to choose the playslist you want.

That’s why I’m hopping for all audios and all subtitles with the release, or else it’s not possible to rebuild the blu-ray back with the menus and the branching.

In my experience, the DTS-HD tracks we use around here aren’t possible to get working with seamless branching. Many software packages report the wrong run times on those files, for whatever reason, and their compatibility seems somewhat limited. But it is possible that Williarob will have better luck.

(this is why my seamless branching disc just has the dolby digital tracks instead).

Has anyone tried simply reencoding them? DTS-HD is lossless, after all, so you won’t be losing anything. But you might gain some well-behaved files as a result. Or is it DTS-HD itself that has compatibility issues?

I’m guessing it has to do with variable bitrate audio, but don’t quote me.

I don’t think anyone has tried. It would be worth a shot, but it’s beyond my abilities.

I doubt it’s the format itself. DTS-HD should work with these software packages.

I’ve tried to find a good DTS decoder with no luck. The best I’ve been able to do is to turn it into a lossy AAC file that I can then split apart. Since I keep having to go through a lossy stage, I’m thinking I might as well just stick to the multi-track AC3 audio. And I have a lot of 5.1 versions because I figured out how to extract the surround information from the Dolby Stereo encoded tracks (i.e., the original 1977 Dolby Stereo of Star Wars) and how the LFE signal was extracted.
