I think TheSessler here got the answer, but I must say...

"They would not convict a man if it meant sentencing an ...." well, since it ended in "an", and that means it starts with a vowel... So it's not "child"? Sentencing a child? A child did it?

A zombie?

An alien, from outer space?

Anne Frank impersonator! No?

Uh the president? The queen of england? I heard she can sell opium as much as she wants, can she kill?

OK it was Bond! He is a 007, he has permission from M to kill! He killed Blofeld and confessed with a smile on his face and a martini!

Maybe the man has diplomatic immunity.

Nup, still not there. Start by finishing the sentence I gave you and you'll get the answer. The man has no special legal privileges which interferes with the law sentencing him, just like you or I don't - however his situation prohibits it because of what sentencing him would mean...

TheSessler already ansered it! He said the person was already in jail, so he was kept in his "comunity" (even though you would rot in the solitaire if you did sucha thing - remember shawnshank redemption?).

No, that is not the answer. To quote the last part of my question:

Why wasn't he sentenced to life-imprisonment?

If he was already in gaol and found guilty of murder he would still be sentenced to life-imprisonment (or possibly a lesser duration) to be served concurrently with his current sentence.

Also to quote the first sentence in my question:

A man is put on trial for murder.

He is a man, not a child. Age isn't truly important to the answer, except that he is older than 18. You've all come up with imaginative and inventive answers, the creativity is certainly there - but not the answer I'm looking for, nor anything really close to it. There is no trick question, however because of whatever legal reasons he couldn't be sentenced to gaol. This is a solid reason, and if a case ever happened like it you would expect the man to walk free. Except that it wouldn't be a riddle to figure out why he went free, it'd be bleedingly obvious.

Now complete this sentence and you'll work out the answer in a matter of minutes:

They would not convict a guilty man if it meant sentencing an ....

He is one-half of siamese twins. It would mean sentencing an innocent man (the brother) to life imprisonment as well.

I don't know why you are smothering people with "wrongs" and "think-about-its". This is an extreme and very unlikely scenario, and is not a conclusion that one can readily come to based on the information you gave. Let's be a little more realistic about our expectations.

Hey, I didn't invent the riddle. MeBe is right. As it would mean sentencing an innocent man, the guilty man can't be sentenced. I guess it his turn, unless sean wookie wants to have his go now (well, I did skip him - but only because the thread was idle for a week)...

"Hey, I didn't invent the riddle."

No, but this is a scenario that requires uniquely lateral thinking. It makes excellent sense after the fact, but certainly not before, and your clues were hardly helpful.

Anyways, how about a "closed room" mystery?

There's a man in a room with a rock. The rest of the room is empty and unimportant. The man is dead. Try to figure out who this man is. You can ask me "yes" or "no" questions.

I was gonig to say "actor" , but that's a good one too . Siamese twins... Although I don't think you could kill someone being a siamese twin without the consent or help of your brother. What does the law say about such case? Does it mean that if I have a siamese twin, I can commit any crime I want?

The law simply prevents innocent men from being punished for crimes they don't commit. Just because your twin-brother is attached to you doesn't mean he helped you or encouraged you in your murder. In fact he was probably the key witness. Unless he was sleeping, intoxicated or deaf and blind.

I find it extremely difficult to murder anyone without waking up your siamese twin, who is, for some reason, sleeping next to you - not only next to you but attached to you. Only if you had a pistol with a silent barrel, and you were on bed with your brother/sister and someone came up to you, and you shot that person. Which would be a very bizarre situation.
