No, I am not entitled to own a backup without express permission from the copyright holder. However the MPAA has no jurisdiction over me, so they can go and rot in America. In Canada file-swapping is legal. As long as you have an official version of star wars on vhs,vcd,ld or dvd they can't touch you. You bought the right to the licence to play back that material.
