Help: looking for... E.T. 20th Anniversary Edition in HD? (with info) — Page 4

This is about 1/3 done. Everything is synced (inserted 2x deleted scenes from BD, removed shotgun) and ‘specialized’ about 40 minutes worth. Had to adjust the contrast of the 20th footage since it was a bit washed out looking, which really shows off the pixelation of the rip in night scenes. But yeah, two shots so far seem to have some corrupted video going on, so the other rip will be helpful. 😃

Spleen should allow it, I think. I’m going to send it to you guys first to check it.

would I also be eligible for you to send me a copy, I know I didn’t really do anything but I feel like im a big part of it for suggesting it in the first place, plus im just so blown away about how quickly everyone jumped on this its nice to see my one man quest to find out if an HD version existed not only proved successful but also became a preservation my only regret is not being able to help gathering sources, perhaps one day I too will be able to assist in a project id really appreciate it btw how big do you think the file would be, my internet sucks and id really like a copy but depending on size I might not be able to download (without it taking an insane amount of time)

Of course. Everyone is eligible. Maybe we can do multiple sizes, but my intention is to do a Blu-ray sized release. These projects, especially 1080p ones, aren’t worth the trouble if you don’t do that. 😃

Author

that sounds beautiful, I guess if their are multiple size releases i’ll just pick the one that best suits me say if its going to be a blu ray release will you go all out with a fancy smancy menu also I’ve been thinking of some names for this so far i came up with

E.T. The 20th Anniversary Preservation
E.T. 20th Anniversary Edition Remastered
E.T. 20th Anniversary Edition HD

E.T. 20th Anniversary Edition HD sounds reasonable. It’s not quite a remastering or a preservation. It’s a reconstruction in a way, but only in the sense that many HD shots are being replaced with less compressed HD shots.

edit: Oh, no plans for a menu (though the release does need a title anyway). If someone wants to make one that’s fine. But I was just planning for a blu-ray compatible MKV.

Do we have special features that are missing from the BD release? It might be a nice idea if there are some about the making of the SE. Just attaching the extra part of the credits for all the people who worked on the 20th, it was a fair bit of work that went into this very silly production.

When it comes to special features I know a lot if not all for the 20th anniversary were ported over to the Blu-Ray release the only thing I could think of would be trailers and ads for the 20th anniversary release

20th anniversary trailer (720p) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYAETtIIClk
another one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm1GI4vKcWc
TV Spot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gC0uO1iELA
uk tv spot/trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP4qnhPPapo
Reeses Pieces commercial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikDt8gxWnSs
nickelodeon showing of 20th anniversary (very weird) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAHR37PRmZ4

I know their was one in 2002 that was for seatbelt safety where E.T. makes a car fly I couldn’t find it though

I have a full disc of bonus features that weren’t included in the Blu-ray but this won’t have enough room. Don’t bother. Just work on the movie.

Its funny how unlike the Star Wars films the ‘Special Edition’ E.T. has not been overly criticized by the public, at least not to that level. Yes it wasnt without its controversies and has fans who dislike it but there was never a high level of fan bickering over which version was better. Probably because Spielberg was nice enough to include both cuts, in perfect DVD quality and anamorphic widescreen, when E.T. was first released to DVD. I dont think this was Spielberg attempting to rewrite history and have this cut replace the original (he wouldnt have included both cuts otherwise). I think it was more like what Lucas had initially claimed the SW SE’s were. A treat for the 20th anniversary allowing fans to see it again and to enhance things that couldnt be perfected at the time. However in Spielbergs case that WAS what the 20th Anniversary of E.T. was. Thats probably partly why that although I prefer the theatrical cut Ive never minded the ‘second’ E.T. and still dont. Yes Im glad the originals back in the spolight, as it should be, but I dont mind having this cut exist as well.

Yes I agree 100% to quote Mr. Spielberg “There’s going to be no more digital enhancements or digital additions to anything based on any film I direct… When people ask me which E.T. they should look at, I always tell them to look at the original 1982 E.T. If you notice, when we did put out E.T. we put out two E.T.s. We put out the digitally enhanced version with the additional scenes and for no extra money, in the same package, we put out the original '82 version. I always tell people to go back to the '82 version” see he had no intentions ever to try to replace the original version he offered both together for one price you can chose whatever cut you want to watch that’s the way it should be the problem I have with George Lucas and I think I can speak for ever Star Wars fan when I say this no one would mind the special editions or even all the changes the problem is unlike Spielberg Lucas wants us to only have the versions he wants us to see and refuses to give us the original versions, if every version was available their would be no issue we could just pick whatever we want what’s wrong is him saying “no you can only watch these and can never have the originals again” that’s the problem right their, and honestly its so stupid from a money making standpoint I mean you know what the demand/love for your franchise is and refuse to offer the one thing that would bring in more money and on top of that if your a huge collector/SW fan you’ll probably buy the special editions as well so they wouldn’t lose a cent

I recall there was quite a fuss when it was in theaters, at least online. The DVD wasn’t released until seven months later, an eternity compared to the time a movie takes to hit video these days.

Steven made it perfectly clear both versions would be available, and that mostly nipped the controversy in the bud. The only legitimate gripe was that one had to buy the more expensive box set to get the theatrical cut.

The packaging of the less expensive edition didn’t clearly identify that it was the 2002 cut either.

I can only imagine the conversations George and Steven have had about such things. 😉

There used to be a pro Prequels & Special Edition blogger who occasionally said some not very nice things about this site. (Although they claimed never to visit our forums.) They blew a gasket when they found out the 2002 cut wasn’t going to be on Blu Ray, and accused Spielberg of caving into fanboys and selling out.

The two disc set also had both cuts. The annoying thing was that the back cover did not specifically specify both cuts although the included booklet did. There’s also the issue of credibility. E.T. was rereleased as a single DVD in 2005 with only the 2002 cut and it was this edition that was only available til the BD came out. Id like to think Universal wouldnt have done this behind Spielberg’s back. Then again if Spielberg was ok with this or for all we know requested that then his initial desire to have both cuts available is rather irrelevant. Now of course its reversed and only the theatrical cut is available. As far as his giving into fanboys perhaps that was the case. I didnt know until he said a few years that he was the one who ordered both cuts to be included on the original DVD. However, for all we know this could be cover up for the dislike the fans expressed for the 2002 cut. Perhaps Universal were the ones to order both cuts included. Perhaps they knew the reputation of the SW SE’s and didnt wanna go down that road with one of their films. However I think Spielberg would be the one to have final say as to whats included and what’s not. That sounds more believable.

I was on Home Theater Forum when the DVD came out. The original cut was added to the standard DVD release of E.T. at the last minute, in reaction to the fan outcry about being forced to buy the collector’s box set to get the '82 version. In fact, I seem to recall that there was still uncertainty about whether or not the '82 cut was on the regular release, right up until people got copies of it and confirmed themselves that it was included.

If you recall, the release was a fold-out digipak that looked like it should have had an outer slip case but didn’t - I heard at the time that it was because it reflected the disc contents before the original cut was added, and they added the '82 cut to the release so late that they didn’t have any time to print new slip covers. (IIRC, wasn’t there some kind of sticker on the shrink wrap indicating the original version was included?)

I bet the 2005 reissue was just another instance of the studio choosing what they thought would be the most average-consumer-friendly version for the single-disc reissue. (The mid-2000s was a very uneven time for catalog re-releases - this is the same general time frame where Sony was dropping widescreen transfers from reissues of catalog titles like Annie, that had previously been released with both formats.)

That would explain the confusing packaging I saw on Ebay. Didn’t see one with a sticker though.

That was the release with the fold out cover. I don’t recall if there was a sticker added to verify it had the original cut. That actually was annoying when Sony stopped issuing widescreen for a while. I have the original flipper disc of Last Action Hero with both formats but the later single layered disc had full frame only. It is strange how 2005 we get ET with only the 2002 cut yet that was the same year we finally got Jaws on DVD with the original mono.

There was a 1080i true capture of the Hdnet on Usenet, not re-encoded, back in Oct 2008, not quite as good as the Wowow capture of the theatrical but pretty close:

Heres the log:

I have it archived somewhere in my collection but for the life of me, can’t remember where, if I find it I,ll let you know. Otherwise, a premium provider like newshosting my still be able to get it, around 2750 days old.

Thanks for that. Maybe I’ll hold off to see if we can get our hands on it. Should be much better.

Just an idea for another audio track would be the “cine-concert” one performed live by John Williams and his orchestra that took place at the premiere, I believe, and that should be on the NTSC DVD as it is on my PAL.
