I have no idea where you could locate these, but even outside of the project I’d love to see two Disney TV specials commissioned to tie into the film’s release in 1979 - The Adventures of Major Effects and Black Holes: Monsters That Eat Time & Space. Both feature effects work by Mike Jittlov, and I’ve never been able to find copies of either despite my best efforts. (A 20-minute excerpt from Major Effects is on YouTube, including some of the Black Hole tie-in footage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6PBnuA-yWc)

I actually taped the Major Effects special when it was broadcast on Qatari television back in the early 80s. It’s in PAL, the colours are weak, and there are burnt in arabic subs, but you’re welcome to it if you’d like. Drop me a PM if you’re interested.

Sending a PM now! 😄

How much of it is actually on The Black Hole?

I’d say all of it and none of it. It’s hosted by Black Hole star Joe Bottoms and uses The Black Hole to branch off into demonstrations of several different types of effects, both practical and VFX (including several snippets of Mike Jittlov’s stuff). It is clearly a promotional piece made to tie in with The Black Hole but not really about The Black Hole. Does that make sense? Runs 46 minutes sans commercials at PAL speed.

And that’s amazing you have the Major Effects special, VideoCollector! I haven’t seen it since 1979. As a good chunk is from Jittlov’s Wizard Of Speed And Time, it could probably be patched from another source. Wish I had it on Laserdisc, as it’s still not out on DVD.

Yeah, that’s the internet for ya. And this forum in particular 😃. Someone somewhere has the very thing you’re looking for!

This project looks amazing! I would love the opportunity to donate towards it’s completion (and see the final results, of course).

Anyone interested in helping out just keep watching this thread and contact me when we are in the testing stage of the BD.

Thanks

I’m very excited to see this film getting some attention. It deserves far better treatment than it has gotten over the years. I’m glad to see the overture is staying, too.

I own a rare full-color Japanese movie program for The Black Hole, and I scanned the pages several years ago. It’s all in Japanese of course but there are several great pieces of art and some fantastic cut-aways of the Cygnus and robots. I will gladly offer those scans if they would be of any use to this project. Let me know. I’ll keep a close eye on this thread for sure.

Absolutely they can be of some use, would love to see them and add them if possible.

Dark_jedi, I just sent you a new PM. Everything I have is ready to go when you are. I put a ton of high-quality extras together for you. Hopefully some of it will prove useful to you for this project.

No difference, just uncompressed.

Another thought for Black Hole extras. Archive.org has nearly the complete run of Starlog magazine, and they did several articles devoted to the film at the time.

That is cool for sure and right up there with what we do, but I have no idea what issues and probably to expensive to get and then to try and scan.

I’ve got this covered - it’s all included in the extras package I put together. The details are in the PM I sent you.

Sorry I’ve fallen behind on things. I’ve captured the old Black Hole LD. I’m actually going to do it again, because the LDDB entry suggests that the CX noise reduction was botched, so a second capture with CX turned off would be prudent.

I really wish I had the Japanese LD issued a few years later to compare with it.

Also, some damage to the 35mm print they used must have affected the soundtrack in one tiny spot, as Old B.O.B saying schedule is garbled.

I have found my Anchor Bay box set, and will try to take pictures this weekend. I will see if the VHS audio mistracks as bad a I remember. Worth a try on my newer Panasonic AG-1980. Maybe I can capture the garbled line?

I also looked through what little vinyl I still have in hopes of finding the “story of” record, but no luck. However, I did find my copy of this:

This came out two years after the movie, and used many sound effects from the film. I actually used my copy for a couple projects back in college. 😃
I’m willing to loan out my record for a transfer, so long as I get a lossless copy.

Actually, I’ve already captured both the “story of” record and the readalong record in lossless, since I own both, so that’s already taken care of. Dark_Jedi already has the files. The record you showed above has some great cover art for sure. I’ve seen the cover before online but I’ve never heard the album. I’d offer to transfer the album in lossless, but honestly I’d be very nervous trusting your album to come through the mail. I’ve had a lot of Christmas packages damaged pretty badly this past December due to rough handling by the UPS and USPS delivery guys. I’d feel pretty awful if your record got damaged during transit. I’ve bought very few records in the past several years but one I did buy arrived smashed a few years ago. The mail guys in my area treat packages very roughly.

That’s great!

Totally understand on the mailmen being a little rough. Had a friend where every package I ever sent to them apparently was thrown out of a passing aircraft.

In other news, I was able to capture the Anchor Bay VHS tape. (No Macrovison, yay!) Not sure if I ever played the tape on an AG-1980 before, but I didn’t hear any of the audio dropout issues I recall from the 90’s. (Either that, or the second generation model handles problem tapes better than I realized.) I’ll know for sure when I check the recordings tonight.

If you can see how it compares to the DVD to if you don’t mind, because as of now that will be our main audio and it is DD 5.1 from the Disney DVD, I have the Anchor Bay as well but not sure if we need anything from that.

Thanks

I’ll try. It’s safe bet the old LD is a straight port of the Dolby Stereo mix. I presume the Anchor Bay and Disney DVD used the 70mm mix for the 5.1? Disney wasn’t overcooking their home video mixes until much later.

Anchor Bay actually had to recall and reissue their original flipper DVD, because Disney supplied them with a video master that was missing one audio channel.

Another thing that might be worth hunting down is the comic book. (If there are decent scans out there.) It actually lasted long enough to show what happens after the movie ends.

There was also a separate newspaper strip adaptation done by Jack Kirby.

I’ve already provided dark_jedi the highest quality scans I could find of the comic books. There are actually some very high-quality scans out there of some of the comics. There were actually several different releases of the comic books, all using the same artwork, with some releases having far better printing than others. There were a total of 4 comics - the first 2 being a comic adaptation of the film (parts 1 & 2) and the other 2 showing further adventures on the other side of the black hole. They were actually pretty poor in terms of artwork and stories, but still definitely worth including as extras.

The Jack Kirby newspaper comics are totally different than the other comics released, and are extremely rare. The artwork is far better. I have searched and searched and searched and found nothing online but a few very small low-res sample pages. I don’t think a full set ever got scanned and uploaded online. I’ve searched absolutely everywhere and turned up nothing but people asking about them. In 2007, Disney published some of the strips with new coloring in their Disney Zone digest magazine. They never completed the run.

I proclaim you Black Hole superfan. 😃

I recall the characters looking nothing like the actors. Dr. Durant kind of looked like Weird Al!

My DVD recorder hiccuped the other night, so I have to do the VHS capture all over again. : (

Yeah, I’ve always been a huge fan of this movie. It has some problems but there’s never been another film before or since that looks or feels like this one. It almost has a dream/nightmare quality to it. I think I’ve gathered a pretty awesome collection of extras for dark_jedi to use. I’m still digging, too. This should be an amazing release for sure when it’s all put together.

Yea we have some pretty damn cool stuff to go over, still waiting on the audio or anything else anyone can come up with, I to really love this movie, and that score, love the score!
