Thanks. I suppose we don’t know yet whether yours or digitalfreaknyc’s is higher quality?

I’ve got a couple of screenshots a page back. It looks pretty good but maybe a little smeary in motion. I’ll wait to see how his compares before I try to figure out how to get it to you.

So you want me to send screenshots matching the ones already posted?

Either post them here or send them to towne32. I can post more tonight if there’s anything specific you wants to see. I just wanted walkie talkies and CG ET to be obvious.

Curious, did any of the laserdiscs have the “terrorist” line? It’d be great to have a 2.0 PCM that’s not censored.

Also, has anyone listened the 2.0 track on the BD? I’d have a feeling it’d be more accurate than the 7.1, usually if it’s 2.0 it’s a straight port of the original mix (though it could be a Jaws situation where the BD “original mix” still has minor differences from previous video releases?)

I wish I had gone into the Castro 35mm showing knowing about these differences. I just know it was the 1982 theatrical cut, terrorist line, guns and all. The print was beautiful, nearly pristine (except for sound pitch warbling at the heads/tails of each reel). It was most likely printed within the last few years, since all or nearly all of Universal’s repertory print archives were ostensibly destroyed by the 2008 studio fire - but the color timing still felt genuinely “1982”.

(The same goes for all the other 35mm screenings of 70s/80s Universal films I’ve seen over the past several years - looked and sounded almost brand new, but the color timing/sound mixing felt authentic to me.)

yea I have the original vhs with the green top and im pretty sure the line is something like “your not going out dressed like THAT” and they cut the “your not going as a terrorist part”

Yes, but I was specifically curious about the later laserdisc releases. Especially the 1996 THX “Signature Collection” release - I know that the Signature line was when the original music was restored to Jaws and John Carpenter’s The Thing, so I have always wondered if they did a new master of E.T. with the “terrorist” line reinstated as well.

Dialogue on VHS (likely LD as well)

Mary: Listen buster. You won’t get four blocks in this neighborhood dressed like that.

Michael: Please??

Mary: No and that is final.

Michael: All the guys are.

I have the 1996 VHS and it’s like this. It also was like this when I saw it on TV about a month ago. I’m gonna assume most if not all pre-2002 releases lack the ‘terrorist’ line but then again I’ve never checked the LD versions and sadly I can’t. I don’t have a LD player 😦. Additionally was this line in the movie theatrically or just cut from home video and TV airings???

I read that it was changed in 1988 so I assume the movie being it came out originally in 1982 had the line in tact in theaters, the blu ray restores it though but the original laserdisc release seems to have come out in 1998 so I guess that’s where the change originate the original vhs release was in 1988 as well and I assume they use the same master as the laserdisc

I would use the Blu-ray as a base and upscale the 720 as needed and then use the DTS track as the main audio. Watch out because the 720 isn’t cropped as much as mine is and is a slightly off AR. You might need to crop.

I agree the 720p version seems to have more detail, Im not exactly an expert on upscaling and quality control but being the blu ray is 1080p and this is 720p wouldn’t it fit better if both sources were 720p because the upscale clearly looks darker and less detailed than the blu ray would, I think the 720p footage mixed with the blu ray even if it were a combination of 720p (for the 20th anniversary footage) and 1080p (for the blu ray) would go together quite nicely, unless it possible fore some one to clean it up a bit and make it more seamlessly match (the blu ray looks incredible, to say the least is seems like it would be hard to match without a true 1080p source) I am sure it will look good regardless anyway then its just a matter of syncing the audio which seems like it wont be too hard

what do you guys think ?

I think that 720p and 1080p are closer than most people think. I’d rather one source be upgraded than downgraded. This isn’t like it’s going to be a Harmy version with multiple editions. It’s one and done. Might as well do it right the first time.

Yes, I agree.

And I generally use a correctly cropped workspace anyway, and simply add the black bars at the rendering stage. So issues with the AR should be obvious while working.

Right, its just one final version no workprints or v2.0 or v2.5 etc its not really even a fan edit its just an HD upgrade of the 20th anniversary version for people like myself who want both versions in the best possible quality I feel that way for all films for that matter, which strangely enough its called the directors cut on movie censorship, I much prefer just calling it the 20th anniversary edition, are all the sources in place at this point ? the only one I could think of as being absent is the 20th anniversary 5.1 DTS track, then again isn’t that included in the 720p version ? if not the dvd is very easy to find, then all that would need to be done is to rip the tracks their are 2 on their I just checked ones the DTS and the others Digital Dolby but they are the same track, but I assume we’re going with the DTS 5.1 track for this

also should we start thinking up names for this release, I think it should be called something other than the “20th anniversary HD”

I would say it’s technically a fan edit, although fan-preservation would be a better term.

true I guess whenever someone edits a movie other than the original creators its a fanedit in a way

No. It’s no different from what Harmy is doing. It’s a Preservation.

And I have the DTS track from the DVD if needed.

Was there a cinema disc that anyone had? I know people are archiving those.

Thanks. Wazzles has sent me the 720p link.

I do need the DTS muxed to the DVD video (or a low quality encode of the video with the same sync) to make sure the end video will synchronize.

I will upload the DVD for you!

I will also upload the 1080i version of the 20th Anniversary logo for you. I believe you said you needed that.

More interesting things I found on IMDB

On the VHS version when E.T. is watching the Tom and Jerry cartoon, he gasps and starts yelling. The original version and 20th anniversary have him scream like he’s scared after the gasp.

In the original theatrical release of this film, in the scene where E.T. is drinking and getting Elliot drunk, Elliot used chalk and began drawing on thin air. This scene was later cut from video and subsequent theatrical releases, but is pictured in The E.T. Storybook.

I had a telesync copy of the theatrical release back in 1982 and I don’t remember the chalk scene. Interesting.

In the original cut, Elliot and his mom go to the principal after the frog incident. The principal was played by Harrison Ford, the screenwriter’s husband. Allegedly the scene was cut because too much attention was brought to Ford, and not to the scene. The scene is not restored in the 2002 edition.

This scene never made it to the theatrical release. Apparently it’s included as an extra on the 4 disc LD set, along with the alternate ending.

People need to stop quoting IMDB like it’s gospel. It’s a Wikipedia for movies before Wikipedia was out - user cultivated and generated. It can be (and frequently is) wrong.

the chalk scene was filmed but never included in any release as for the Harrison Ford scene its on the a LD set along with an alternate ending this I can confirm as I’ve seen it

Hmm, maybe the other copy would be useful for a few parts. There are a few corrupted frames it seems.

Hey, at least you have the option for two!
