This newsgroup crap is completely confusing. I installed forte' agent and tried to pull up alt.binaries.starwars.... Now it is clear to me why there are bit torrent sites and other methods of exchanging info and files... because news groups are barely user friendly... and that is being kind.

Darth Osor's tutorial will be very helpful and appreciated as this news group nonsense gives me a headache

Well, remember that newsgroups came first, when the Internet was not quite so user-friendly. There was a steeper learning curve. It can be well worth the effort, as there's generally a greater variety of stuff available - at least until someone puts it on Bit-torrent. One thing's for sure, the download speed is solely dependant on your connection, not on how many points you've earned or what percentage you've uploaded, etc. It's also far more anonymous than any peer-network. You are far less likely to get caught downloading warez or porn. This is why they continue to thrive to this day.

I agree to a point and the reason is I have been downloading for 2 days now (took 2 days to figure out) and everything I have downloaded is either incomplete or corrupt. I have yet to burn a DVDR. It would be nice if it worked??? I am going to try some more. Files download faster but what good does it do if you cant use them.

I would rather donate to MYSPLEEN, download in 12 to 24 hours (complete & not corrupt) and burn in 20 minutes.

Yeah.... I do like the anonimity aspect...but i also noticed many of the files were corrupt such as the mysterious mysteries covers... most of the downloads were bad archives/ corrupt. Maybe I will try a different s/w

This is now a quest to learn this......

Don't forget that you can use .par files to repair your main files. (If they posted pars along with them.)

I've been with astraweb for about a year now. They have great rates (it's $15 a month unlimited) , no limits, great speed (I average download at 400+kB/sec), and at least 10 day retention.

Thanks for the excellent posts, Osor! I'm really looking forward to ESB & ROTJ. Will you be posting them soon?
Author

I'm posting ESB tonight. I slowed down my DVD postings (2 days between each) so that folks with slower connections could get them.

Glad you enjoy...may the force be with you!

Ok, I have "Agent" and I am on alt.binaries.starwars group and the last date anything was posted was 2-8-05, which is when I started on this. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to update something or has nothing been posted since the 8th? Can someone help please? I have read on here where things have been posted, but I can't find anything new.

Nevermind, I figured it out.

To answer your original question for others, you need to highlight the newsgroup you want to update and either click the button named "Get New Headers in Selected Groups" near the top left of the screen or click Online and in the dropdown menu click "Get New Headers in Selected Groups".

This is a very common problem that people have at first.

These groups are usually updating all the time as new things are posted and old things get deleted off your particular server.

I'm not sure what you meant in your last post but I think that it is one of two things:

first thing that it may be...you somehow wiped out existing posts. well, to get all existing headers in a group do the following...in agent go to alt.binaries.starwars and on the top bar of agent go to the "online" drop-down menu and choose "get all headers in selected groups". That will get all of the posts that your newsserver has for alt.binaries.starwars then you should be able to download what you missed.

second thing that it may be...your ISP's newsserver has bad retention and the posts timed out. In that case you may have to shell out a few bucks to get a premium newsserver (well worth it). I use the "unlimited dsl" account from news.astraweb.com for $15 a month but they also have many other accounts to choose from that can fit pretty much any budget.

hopefully with my scattershot response I solved the issue.

p.s. the tutorial is on temporary hiatus...I have a big new project in the works.
Until then go here for usenet tutorial help: http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

I was not not "Getting New Headers" each time I went on and I just thought no-one was posting anything new. I think I figured it out now, a little late for the Wookie Split Screens which is what I was after but oh well. Maybe a repost or I will get them when Rikter posts them.

Thanks for all your help.

Guys, I need some help over here! I followed DarthOsor's instructions so far, to get me connected to Usenet. Then I subscribed in alt.binaries.starwars and retrieved the posts.
What do I do from now on? Is it just me, or there isn't anything posted for download?
I have no previous experience on the Newsgroups, so from what I read in this forum, I was expecting to find there all the files I couldn't find over myspleen.
How does this thing actually work? Do I have to wait for someone to post a file? And after he posts it, how long does it stay there for people to get it?
And now, for your feature presentation:
The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.
In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.

Every time you fire up Agent (or go to use it), retrieve headers in the group(s) you're interested in. Then pick what you want, and start it downloading.

Is it just me, or there isn't anything posted for download?

It's definitely just you! There are a few good things up at the moment.

Do I have to wait for someone to post a file?

Yes. To speed it along, you might want to post a REQ: post. But I'd recommend a bunch of lurking first. As a long time Usenet user, it's annoying to get too many newbie questions in a forum that hums along nicely without. All the answers are out there (here?); you shouldn't need to clutter a good binaries group with help requests.

And after he posts it, how long does it stay there for people to get it?

That's highly dependent on your newsserver. A free server from your ISP might give you only a couple of days (and parts might be broken). A pay server like Giganews or EasyNews might run you $15 or $20 a month, but have way better retention and completeness.

Are there any disadvantages using your ISP's Usenet-access, especially regarding anonymity? I am a little afraid that downloading dozens of Star Wars DVDs might catch their attention.

My ISP provides Usenet-access (without traffic limit) for only 3 bucks a month, so I am thinking about giving it a try.

I get Usenet through my ISP for free as part of the basic package.

For the more obscure newsgroups and for when the ISP service falls down, I have a $25 for 65Gb Astraweb account.

As for anonymity, I would have thought that Usenet, torrents and other P2P downloads would be as bad as each other to your ISP. I have never heard of anyone having any problems.

My Astraweb account seems to be much more anonymous.

Just wanted to add some par2 info:

People if you download off of newsgroups you MUST know what par2 files are and how to use them. They are not posted just for fun they are files that can fix rar files that are broken, most of the time NO FILLS are needed if par2 files are used correctly!
Here are some guides:
http://www.slyck.com/ng.php?page=6
http://usenethelp.codeccorner.com/QuickPar_Primer.html

I would use the QuickPar program to handle par2 files, HERE

LEARN HOW TO USE PAR2 FILES!!!

Here are a few usefull links.

For Agent 2.0, I think that the guide started by The Dark One is the best one to get you going.

The latest version of Agent is very different to the version on that guide.

I'm using Grabit for usenet now after my previous application, binary boy, expired. It seems to work very well and has no expiration date, so I'm convinced it's a good usenet viewer, and easy to use, though I'm not sure if anyone else would agree; haven't asked.
