The entire movie is complete. I believe this has actually been screened once or twice.

Wow I’m so out of the loop. That’s awesome news. Are there plans to release it to the public soon?

You must be really out of the loop, because it’s not being released to the public. If it was Mike would face legal action from Disney. Our best hope it that Disney adopts it for an official re-release of Star Wars.

I have some hope for that. Given that Disney takes no action against Harmy, Adywan, or 1negative_team, I find it curious that they would make such threats against Mike. Obviously, Mike’s work is on a much grander scale than any of those I just mentioned, but perhaps they have a desire to use it for their own re-release.

I believe Mike has said that he heard directly from people at Disney or Lucasfilm that made it clear what the repercussions would be. As great as those other projects are, they would not compete with an eventual official release the way that Mike’s would.

But the other issue that you’ll see come up, if you read through this thread, is that the people who contributed to the knowledge and assets Mike used (including the film itself) were clear that they do not want it distributed illicitly. They made that a condition of their helping him, I believe. And Mike may also be concerned about career-related effects.

Yes, the news that Mike has shared recently is encouraging. As for the legal action, Disney has been tolerant thus far. And though Harmy’s work is amazing, it’s still a patchwork of various sources. Legacy is a pristine 4K scan/restoration taken directly from multiple 35mm copies of the original 1977 Star Wars. It is so flawless that its release would render any attempt by Disney to re-release the original film nearly moot. That’s why I think that Mike has been warned about the potential consequences of a release. On the flip side, Mike has effectively already done all their restoration work for them, so I’m optimistic that they will adopt Legacy, and hopefully offer Mike some well-deserved compensation for all his hard work.

Very much so unfortunately.

Wow. This thread just ruined all the other SW projects for me. Why did I look?

The Alamo Drafthouse should play Mike’s version this summer. Why not? They must be paying Fox and Disney to screen them so why would they care which version played?

The Drafthouse appears to be showing actual, original 35mm prints of the '97 version from 1997, which is pretty cool.

That’s cool but a Legacy DCP and or print in at least one location would be even cooler!

I wonder if it’s possible to get those '97 prints scanned since they’ll assumedly be in decent projecting condition.

For some strange reason I doubt a reputable movie theater would do that with prints loaned to it.

Right. And there’s really no need to worry about the fact that there’s no way they’re going to let us scan their prints.

Other 97SE prints have been available from time to time. ANH has been scanned at least once. In general, the SE prints are surely in better shape than the originals. Plus they’re not faded, of course.

Same here. But the other projects are all we’ll have, at least for a while.

Hi there, this project looks beautiful, but I’m just wondering here… Is this a restoration or a reconstruction? And are you doing the other films in the OT?

Also, is Disney actually considering releasing this sometime in the future? If so, is there some sort of estimated date or can that not be revealed?

Sorry for asking so many questions, I’m just curious.

This restoration uses several original 35mm prints of the movie as its source. It is not a reconstruction like Harmy’s.

Is this really a restoration when special effects are enhanced with techniques like rotoscoping?

I’m not sure if I understand your answer correctly but the website is full of examples where rotoscoping , cloning and other techniques are used for effects enhancement. That’s not restoration but manipulation

I think the website content is outdated. A lot of articles on the Legacy website reflect what he previously wanted to do, which was another special edition sort of thing. But the current Legacy is a restoration of the original Star Wars that utilizes multiple 35mm prints to obtain the highest quality picture.
