That is one damn fine computer there, Sessler. I highly recommend it.

Dayv, OS X.3. Just a version I can use to upgrade from OS 9.2. My G3 should run it fine according to the guy at the Apple Store. I might intentionally lose some of the more memory intensive software like Quark. Actually, I'll probably dump all OS 9 software and update to more recent OS X based stuff. Just not install all of it as I don't really need it and only have a 6 GB HD anyway.

Would you recommend me just upgrading to OS X.3 or flushing my HD entirely and rebuilding from the OS X.3 CDs?

Do you think it is worth the money to upgrade to a Powerbook instead?

As opposed to an iBook? That would depend on what you're using it for. If you're doing a ton of graphics or video processing, I'd say yes. If it's just for normal shits and giggles (web surfing, online gaming, iPod control, iTunes, etc.), then run with an iBook. The benefit of the PowerBook is the processing capability. You have to be one who is looking for a computer that can be taxed to the max. If this is the case, then a PB is what you need.

I STILL HAVE OS 9 ON MY iMAC. I'VE FOUND THAT I STILL NEED IT FROM TIME TO TIME.

Anyway, thanks for all the help.

If I update the software I use most often, then my need for OS 9 would be nil. I've got everything I need for OS X in terms of software. Should work fine. Of course, the whole concept of upgrading like that scares the bejeezus out of me.

well your both wrong and only one of you is right. gun you are correct as far as i know P4 is better the Celeron, and gun you are wrong about AMD. in terms of desktop PCs AMD is the the best proccessor to get. they have been known to need a lill more cooling then the other but overall they are by far the best PC chips to get. i dont know what your friends was talking about with centrino a buddy of mine has one and i have compared his to my P4 i get about 3 and half to 4 hours of batt life, he gets liek 6 and a half to 7 hrs. and in terms of speed his is equal to mine, if not faster. ill ask him thou if his chip is getting wonky and if his batt life is reduced.

I know. I made the jump from 8.6 to 9.1. I was sweating through the entire process. 9.1 to 9.2 is no big thing. Just like X.1 to X.2 to X.3 is no big deal. It's just the jumps from 7 to 8, 8 to 9, or 9 to X that terrify me to no end. I've got a friend here at work that says he will clone my 9.2 HD so that if something goes wrong with the upgrade, we can just restore the previous settings.

Well, I think I've definitely decided on which one to get.

I'm going to get the Toshiba Satellite P30 with a 3.2ghz P4, 512 megs of ram, and an 80 gig HDD.

And those are just MSRPs; I've seen the 12" for $1199 Cdn.

I want the 12" with the SuperDrive.

I'm surprised you saw it for cheaper considering the MSRPs on Mac stuff are usually the actual price charged. No sale prices are ever allowed by Apple. That's why, even if you see an iPod listed in a sale ad for Circuit City, Best Buy, etc., it is still the same price; just on display in the ad.

Any recommendations for great places to go when up there and buying a computer to haul over national borders? Only ever been to Toronto myself.

Come to Alberta; no provincial sales tax here, just the GST. And Edmonton is a shopper's paradise (West Edmonton Mall, 3 Best Buys, a frickin' HUGE IKEA--the list goes on).

Sorry, but I couldn't resist tooting my own horn.

No; Banff is a federal park site with oodles of ski resorts, overpriced souvenirs and a Swiss-style gondola ride.
