I've wondered that myself. But it would only work if the b-roll is the same as the source anyway, which would make the edit moot. The soft edge shows both the a-roll and b-roll by nature, so if the scene looks different then it would be noticible if the b-roll didn't match what was visible-but-obscured by the soft edge.
