Elaborate please.

I assume the filename you mentioned was the "old" AXN HD open matte 16:9 version. And there was the "flawed" Japanese HDTV.

Is there a third one?

What is the best possible rip of this movie? I have the 9.54g HDTV rip from Cinemax that looks like 25fps reencoded to 24p and thus has choppy picture. I also have the 2gig Ozlem rip which is a smoother picture but is plagued with interlacing and compression issues.

Is there a large file size quality rip of the Cinemax version that isn’t the one I’m commonly finding with said issues? I’m looking to burn it to a Blu-ray disc.

Update: After reading through the entire forum, I’ve found the Hdclub rip. Excellent quality for the theatrical version and am currently getting Docsap’s BR set.

Was anyone able to convert the Hdclub 17g rip from MPEG2 to AVC MPEG4?

‘Ripbot264’ should do that quite nicely.

Has anyone viewed/currently have Docsap’s 2 BD release of the Special Edition? I’m getting it now but it will take a few weeks as I’m quite late to the party. Just wondering if they are good quality or if one of the discs is worth it over the other? Thanks.

Where did you find it? It’s not at the usual places and docsap apparently abandoned it according to this thread. Send me a private message.

I have viewed said set. Unfortunately, except for special features, it has been all but supplanted by superior HDTV airings.

For his BD, Sapirstein heavily cropped that old Japanese HDTV airing to rid it of the subtitles. Also included is an upconvert of an SD source, but obviously, the new HD airings trump that.

In short, it’s not worth getting anymore.

What HD airing is better than the SD upconvert? Are you referring to the 25fps AXN rip?

Can anyone provide help/send or seed Docsap’s project? I have 72.4% finished but it’s been stuck for a months without any seeds. Any help would be appreciated.

You recording it and then uploading it for all of us would be of better use to everybody.

So what’s the best version out there of this, at this point? Anyone know?

Author

Apparently the best version is what’s already in the wind since we don’t have this UK cap.

I’ve only got a TiVo box so havent a clue how to extract the recording from there

Could you make a capture of that program from your TiVo box?

You could use a HDMI splitter and a game capture device.

Do you realize you replied to a 13 month old post?

I can chime in, as I have (almost?) all the HDTV recordings available…

  • Cinemax (Theatrical cut) AFAIK it’s the only TC version available; there is also a German mux around here, but video seems untouched

1080i MPEG-2 29.97fps 12.8mbps - the best version around, period! Color grading is cold, tealized

  • France (Extended Edition)
    1080i AVC 25fps 7mbps
  • UK (Extended Edition) presumably Sky
    1080i AVC 25fps 5.8mpbs
  • RTS UN HD (Extended Edition) with commercial breaks
    720p AVC 50fps 10.2mbps

image is soft, cropped on right or both sides; color grading neutral - seems to stay between Cinemax and DVD

  • AXN HD (Extended Edition open matte)
    1080p AVC 23.976fps 8.3mbps
  • Unknown (Extended Edition open matte)
    1080i AVC 25fps 7.7mbps

image is soft, not cropped on the sides (apart obviously missing some details due to the fact it’s open matte); color grading as DVD, plus magenta blanket

  • Japanese
    I have lost it! 😦

image was not bad AFAIR, but with annoying hardsubs in the image; color grading warm and unique to this version (like, for example, T2 onto squeezed LD first edition); it possibly be a transfer without color timing

Notes:

  • ALL DVDs (PAL and NTSC) have the same color grading
  • Dealer tape contains about 70minutes of the movie (have still to check it, but probably it’s the first part without trims [EDIT: CONFIRMED!] ); color grading is different from any other - in some shots is similar to one version, while in the shot after is similar to another…
  • Laserdisc is also available at 1.90:1; again, color grading seems different from other version, but it still has the magenta blanket (still to check if 2.35:1 is different)

Comparisons, from top to bottom: Japanese, DVD, AXN, UK, Cinemax

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

Any chance of a Special Edition restoration using those sources?
Great post, by the way. I’d love to get my hands on some of those.

What is the best rip of the SpEd in terms of video quality?

I have the axn rip and for me it’s 25 fps with video + audio speedup shaving 6 minutes off the run time and making everyone sound like chipmunks.
