THX on 35mm Tech IB preservation - HELP NEEDED (work in progress) — Page 9

poita,

I just wanted to squeeze in a “thank you” for all the hard work you are doing for this project. I know it eats up a lot of your personal, free time and that isn’t something any of us are taking for granted. The community at large thanks you, and we appreciate the effort of keeping us up-to-date. I’ve already donated, but I am trying to save up a bit more funds to send your way as a way of showing my gratitude. Cheers!

If you watch it on loop for a while you get an idea of the damage, that is the least damaged sequence, but we are very lucky to have found this print.

The cleaned up version looks just marvelous! Can’t wait to see this!

Actually Harmy, I’ve been meaning to talk to you re despecialising THX, it would make sense for me to do the needed scenes first, if you have a list.

I don’t (like I said, I’ve never even seen it) but I’m sure someone does. And then yeah - with the changed scenes restored in a quality like this, it should be a piece of cake for me to despecialize it. I sure hope to get a grindhouse version first, because I really wanna watch the film before I start tinkering with it 😉

Yeah, once the other drives arrive, I will put together a semi-cleaned up version quickly that should be quite watchable, I ned it anyway to plan the proper cleanup workflow.

If someone could put together a scene list from the bluray, of what has been changed, then I can do the full restoration of those scenes first, before tackling the restoration of the entire film. I’d also restore those to match the blu-ray, which would be quite a different process to what I have planned for the film itself.

I did a ghetto restoration of THX using the 16mm scan (audio and SEN), the LD, and the BD. The vast majority of changes are listed here: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=541751

I don’t think it’s 100% comprehensive as there were a few other slight differences in frames here and there (plus obviously the pre-1978 differences to consider), but it’s everything major that I noticed (between LD and BD). I wish I still had my NLE project files but it seems I do not.

Anyway, that list would be a fantastic start for cleaning up the vast bulk of the shots needed.

The BD has a blue tint over much of the film. I removed it from a lot of scenes using an LUT that someone on OT made. Are you guys planning on matching the BD to the IB colors?

Yes, that would definitely be the preferable approach. The colors of the IB seem fantastic, especially after Poita’s corrections. I’m sure when he said he’d restore the shots to match the BD, he meant more in terms of grain and sharpness and stuff, not color.

I figured. 😃 Hopefully you guys will have a fairly easy time with that part. It’s revisionist color, but it doesn’t seem to be mutilated and you have a great reference.

Edit: WOW. Just checked out the cleanup sample. Really stunning work. Amazing print and scan!

Yes, matching the grain and sharpness and black and white points basically, which would mean I would treat those scenes separately, as I wouldn’t scrub the entire film quite as heavily.

Ugh. Looking at that list of changes… You just have to ask yourself… Why?

This is why this project is important: this isn’t Star Wars and the masses are not writing petitions to get THX released in its original version(s). Like Poita has said: Star Wars, in its original version, has been scanned. It’s safe. This 35mm print is all we have for a high definition restoration of this piece of history.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

You’d think they would!

For those of you who haven’t seen the Rogue One trailer yet, there is something the movie has in common with THX. Can you guess what it is? 😉

Both use a real world location. Underground. 😃

That was so EXCELLENT! And that was seeing the 1st-pass, then the 2nd-pass came and …

This is going to be AWESOME!!

Another 2¢, use the abundance of good color, on-the-set photos as a color correction guide. I’ve always been deimpressed by how much real color is missing from the various releases (and it gets worse with each new version). Here’s a proof-of-concept with the 1st-pass image, compared it to a set shot (from online search), and CC'ed into this . .

UPDATE:
Just wanted to add these picture settings (yellow highlighted) for the curious.

First applied, my Technicolor-izer approach does not rigorously duplicate Technicolor film sensitivity – it’s only a proof-of-concept that progressively increases a primary-color’s saturation as it becomes increasingly dominant among the remaining primaries (per pixel). It shows very little effect at this stage, but the color correction will bring it out . .

Next, get your eye-droppers ready! The color correction is likewise rule-of-thumb from a paint program, working on individual R-G-B components. It mostly consists of setting the spectrum end-points to approach the dark (>0) and light (<255) areas of the reference picture (into the legal picture range of approximately 16-240). Then gamma independently moves the R-G-B mid-points to approach the similar middle-colors (≈128±). Fine tune it once or twice, for when one setting affects another, and then you’re done . .

Has anyone given Dre’s color matching tool a whirl with this, to get the blu-ray looking non-terrible?
