Are we seeing the first Despecialized version not to be released by Harmy?

Nope! Marvins and Laserschwert have also done localizations using Harmy’s lossless encodes. And Laserschwert’s ESB had some 35mm upgrades, so he was allowed to call it ESB 2.1 I believe. 😃

Thanks for clearing that up. I’m looking forward to your colour-corrected version from Harmy’s lossless master.

Thanks. Still looking for people to check the test render for errors.

If you want another set of eyes, I can take a look…if you want.

Again, I’m willing to take a look as always.

Yep, I have you marked down as well. 😃 Was just hoping to get a few more before starting a group PM. But I can always do separate PMs with anyone else who joins in later.

Towne32 - what is involved with checking over a render for you? Never done it, but willing to help if it is something I can and time permits.

So if anyone is willing to look at the preview, please leave a post and let me know. I’ll start a group PM with the link and we can discuss what we see there. As I said, all feedback is welcome, but if it ends up being bogged down with minor ‘color wishlists’, I might try to steer it towards actual issues/errors. If there’s something you feel very strongly about, color wise, that hasn’t been said, it’s fine but no promises. Mostly, mention anything that I might have made worse than 2.6. 😃

If there are a lot of changes we come up with, I can do another test render. Otherwise, I’ll encode the final render once I have Harmy’s files, mux it, etc. I’ll let it sit with you guys until enough people have watched it that we think it’s in good enough shape to upload.

Thanks guys.

I’d be happy to give it a test drive!

I thought I recognized your foul stench when I entered this forum!

Hello there,
I want to watch the Despecialized Movies on my TV with my BluRay Player.
How can I burn the MKV on a playable BluRay Disc? Wihich programs should I use?

I agree with Town32, wait on next ver. also there is always the AVCHD.iso file which
is much smaller & ready to burn. Make your experience MUCH easier! That is of course
if you only need the English Audio track.

I would like to have people who have been following the thread give it a check for some final feedback. The previous (2.5, still) release had a good amount of error checking on the final render from other eyes, which 2.6 could have probably used more of. So, I want to make sure it’s right this time because I don’t want to do it again! 😃

I wouldn’t mind having a look!

Towne, for the ANH crawl version of 2.6.1 (or whatever it is we’re calling this), are you going to be using Harmy’s 1997 version again or Darth Lucas’s 1981? I don’t have any real preference, just wondering.

Author
Time

I believe he’s using Harmy’s 97. There is a noticeable gate weave in the crawl of my version that makes it jump around somewhat distractingly from the starfield. I understand him using the 97 crawl as it’s a more pleasant casual viewing experience.

I’ve said it before, watch mine if 1981 accuracy means that much to you, but if you just want ANH in the crawl, go with Towne32’s.

Do the lossless source files have the Greedo subtitles as a separate removable element? Because while you’re in there, you could make the Greedo subtitles more theatrically accurate, using subs from the Silver Screen Edition. I’ve already made rough (but good enough IMO) Photoshop layers you could use to just overlay the SSE subs on a sub-free image. You’d either lose or have to re-do any frame-to-frame differences, such as gate weave or grain, but I think it would still be a big net improvement even if those were lost. I recently updated the screenshots in the first post of the Project Threepio thread to use more theatrically-accurate subtitles than are currently available in Star Wars Despecialized, so you can see how they’re supposed to look. The “Going somewhere, Solo?” image is Despecialized with the alien subtitles from SSE Photoshopped in (positioning isn’t pixel-perfect because I was trying to cover up the old subs). The other image is just a capture of SSE color-matched to Despecialized 2.6.

This idea wouldn’t really work if you had to cover up the old subs for every frame, as it’s not a clean overlap, so the subs need to be removable in your source files.

I’ll vote for a sub-free version of the Greedo scene as well… Either as part of the lossless movie or as a separate download.

Nope, subs are baked into Harmy’s.

ANH is just sort of a bonus version, not 1981 accurate. I’m actually using a regraded BD version next time. the increased resolution helps the color adjustment when the text is very far back. The aliasing in lower res versions kind of interfered with that last time.

If anyone can get me a more polished 1981 crawl and flyover I’d be happy to use it.

Author
Time

Alternatively, if no one wants the 97+ crawl/flyover, and I can’t get the 1981, I can of course only release the 1977 version. I thought people might want the ANH crawl, even if it’s from SE era, but if that isn’t the case then it’s no problem!

Author
Time

Oh, I very much want the ANH version. The 77 is well and good when you’re only watching Star Wars, but I like to have the ANH for marathons, for consistency’s sake.

I don’t have a file of the color corrected Greedo scene without subs but considering how much the color timing of that scene is changed in Towne’s version, he’d be better off color-correcting the BD anyway, if he wanted to implement the new subs.

Author

Well, let me know if you want my sub templates. You’re certainly welcome to make your own too, or opt out of the idea entirely.

I’ve corrected from the BD before for that scene. But I have a hard time getting it to match the last shot. I did only a so-so job even in 2.6, but felt it was good enough.

If I get it looking okay, I’ll use your template but might need help getting the grain and weave looking good.

There are two other scenes in 2.6 that I used the blu-ray as a starting point for, and no one seems to have mentioned yet. 😃

Author

PM sent. I hope my templates make it easier. Regarding the gate weave, DeEd 2.5 had a lot more gate weave on the subtitle element than SSE, so IMO you could be a lot more subtle about it, or you could even skip it entirely, and not a lot of people would notice. Grain’s a good idea though.

Okay. I have no experience applying grain to anything, especially not for just a single layer.

Edit: I think I’ve got the BD color looking reasonable enough. I’ll put together a test render of the scene for you guys.
