Haha! The funny thing is, I immediately thought of this shot when I made my first reply. Thank ypu for gif-ifying it!

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I can’t take credit. I totally stole that from google. 😃

It’s all good. He just needs to get down the “stir, whip” pattern.

I’m in. Personally, I’m no SW fan. But if this project can help with other projects as well, why not join in.

You’re in an odd forum then.

There’s so many great ideas in this thread, very much in line with some thoughts I’ve had for years of a fan-based, open-source restoration community. I admit to being quite concerned about the legal implications of sharing copyrighted images/sequences, so some sort of air-gap to somewhat insulate contributors from liability and to keep movies away from pirates would be beneficial overall.

I’m not sure how exactly that could be implemented, but DaVinci Resolve has a “remote user” feature that could be explored. I believe this leaves images and project data on a remote server, while the user, in another location, can see and edit with them, without physically copying the image data to the user’s own hard drives.

If your crop is water, what, exactly, would you dust your crops with?

Monks is a long-time member at Fanres (well as long as that site’s been around haha), someone there probably pointed him here. 😃 The discussion definitely goes beyond just SW. You could say, clean up a LD rip this way if you wanted to.

I just took a look at the PLE PFClean. It’s pretty complicated for someone who doesn’t know how all this works. Maybe an idea would be to show people how to use it, so we can have standardized frame edits.

There’s a tutorial on thestarwarstrilogy.com by williarob. But it doesn’t get into manual cleanup. Pfclean has a few tutorials on vimeo or dailymotion.

To get started, you need your video in lossless mov format or image series.

I’ll look into converting the MKV for ESB Grindhouse to MOV. I tried to do some of their tutorials, and it was working pretty well. I’ll definitely look at more of them and see what I can do. I’d love to see this project come to life.

I would recommend simply encoding a sample so you can learn pfclean if that is your goal. Since there aren’t details about how this distributed work type project is going to function (or that Grindhouse would be the source), and a lossless encode of the whole film is going to be like a terabyte.

I have an ongoing subscription to Photoshop CC, plus time, and a love of Star Wars; if I can help, I’d like to! 😃

Also, I agree that having access to an entire shot—not just individual frames—would be a good idea. It’s often far better to clone from the next/preceding frame than within a damaged frame.

Well, that is exactly what pfclean does. Though you can set it to make guesses based on only the current frame, if the adjacent ones don’t have useful information.

Ok I see. I figured it’s a transfer that can be worked with. Eventually, someone will have to figure all this out. You’re right about it being large; 6000 frames of Grindhouse is ~13GB.

I was going to reply with “Oh, sure! With those things runnin’ around? You can count me out!”
But I couldn’t find the gif 😃

No but seriously, I think these kind of cleanups should be left to those semi professionals (Harmy and others) who know what they’re doing. Otherwise the end result could be junk.

The semi professionals are in charge of this endeavor. I don’t think they’ll put anyone in a role that runs the risk of junk output.

That’s exactly what people told about Wikipedia at the begining… 😉

Like it has been said ealier, it appears that the collaborative process will be something like “spot the dust and scratch” on the frame. Without installing any software, and without technical knowledge.
And more generally, we are thinking to make it the best way, and to ensure the highest quality. Of course.
