Idea -- Original Theatrical Prequels

Author
Time
Would anyone involved in skillful DVD/Video editing be interested in editing the prequel DVDs to match how they were presented in theatres?

It's not a huge edit.
Episode one would require removing certain parts of the podrace sequence, some shots on Coruscant, etc.

And Episode two would only really require a few lines and shots taken out.

It's really not a huge undertaking, but it might be a good idea for huge Star Wars fans. Just to have the "original" version of the prequels too.

Feel free to flame.

The only real complication I can think of is the "Die Jedi Dogs" line that was removed from Clones. Clones also has two theatrical versions, one for normal cinemas, one for digital cinemas. It is a good idea to have prequels preserved in their theatrical formats too, however since the revised versions were released so quickly after the theatrical release it isn't the most important thing in the world. With that said, I second the motion.

The Japanese Laser Disc of TPM is the theatrical cut.

Neil

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

I don't know if it is (I have heard that it is), the VHS release of TPM wasn't theatrical... I guess the LD could be, and if it is then it is a good source to go off. But compare that analogue non-anamorphic NTSC source to a digital anamorphic PAL source and you can have it at far greater quality.

I'm quite sure Lucas added some effects before releaseing the VHS, and then added more effects for the DVD. And what do you mean you've got Die Jedi Dogs?

Your official DVD? Your bootleg DVD?

Um, no. There was nothing changed on the VHS version of TPM. It's the same as the Theatrical release. All the added effects and scenes were done specifically for the DVD.

I don't know what DVD you have Daniel, but my Official AOTC DVD has the "Die, Jedi dogs!" line as well. The only differences that I know of are the shot of anakin's mech hand, which was changed for the digital theatrical release, and the extended garage scene on the dvd with the "to be angry is to be human" line.

Wasn't it replaced with "die jedi guards"? I seem to remember TPM wasn't released as quickly as most movies are at the moment, it took something like 8-12 months to come to VHS, and when it did it boasted having new scenes added to it. Of course I'm probably compleatly wrong, I'm just going off what I remember. It seems Lucas can't leave anything alone.

Here's what IMDB has to say about DVD changes:

"In the original theatrical version, when C-3PO is firing on the Jedi, he said "Die Jedi, Die Scum." The word "scum" was removed from all subsequent versions. In fact, if you listen closely to the current DVD version, you can still hear 3PO begin to make the "s" sound before his voice cuts out."

and also:

"The DVD edition of "Attack of the Clones" features several small additions to the theatrical version of the film:

In the Lars Homestead, after Anakin has confessed his slaughter of the Tuskens and slumped to the floor, Padmé states, "To be angry is to be human," and Anakin responds, "I'm a Jedi! I know I'm better than this!"

Before Jango Fett is killed by Mace Windu, the sparks coming out of his damaged jetpack are much more visible.

After falling from the gunship and eventually awakening, Padmé replies to the Clonetrooper's question of concern with a painfilled "Uh-huh" instead of "Yes."

During the wedding scene, the Digital cut's moment of Padmé taking Anakin's hand has been inserted instead of a shot of Anakin's false arm and a pan up."

I have the vhs TPM and it looks like the theatrical to me. Rikter has a LD rip of TPM I got from him and apart from the soundtrack it is inferior to the vhs in picture quality.

I also have a Telecine of AOTC theatrical. It is the non-digital edit. And 3po still says 'die jedi dogs' on this as well. So where this 'Scum' line comes from I don't know.

I definitely remember hearing the "scum" line in the theater because my ears perks up in amused disbelief. I was peeved that it wasn't on the DVD because the sequence was not nearly as amusing to me as it was before. Maybe there were a couple different prints floating around.

"Die Jedi, Die Scum."

IMDB is about as reliable as AICN half the time. Die Jedi, Die Scum was never in the movie. It was always "Die, Jedi Dogs."

It's never been changed to "Die Jedi Guards."

This is so odd to me that people are thinking this.

I assumed they meant "Die Jedi scum" being changed to "Die Jedi dogs."

"Guards" just seems like people mis-hearing "dogs."

If the LD rip looks worse than the VHS, then it wasn't a very good LD rip.

Was there ever an AOTC LD?

There was no AOTC LD and the LD of TPM only had a Dolby Digital track on it. No DTS.

The Dolby Digital track on the LD is superior to the DVD.

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

"The Dolby Digital track on the LD is superior to the DVD."

Because it was designed for playback specifically in a 5.1 environment, rather than dumbed down for home theaters that may only have stereo systems.

Correct! LD Dolby Digital tracks were frequently the theatrical 6 track mix without any concern about downmixing. They were glorious!

Correct. I think it was done by those clowns at LOOK. Rikter should be able to clarify that, or not.

Nope.

"Jedi Scum" was never in the flick. There weren't multiple audio mixes attached to certain prints. The line was "Die, Jedi Dogs" and was never anything else.

It's sort of like how people SWORE they saw Biggs scenes in Episode IV back in 77. Or more closely, how some people SWORE the line in Return of the King during the paths of the dead scene was "That Blade was broken" when it was always "That LINE was broken."

Wow, you know, you're probably right. I just saw that part of Return of the King a few weeks ago and, remembering it, I could swear that it was "blade". Interesting how the mind workd that way. Oh well, I've been proven wrong.
