Having it available for the upcoming home 4K push is absolutely part of the pitch package. I agree it’s a powerful asset!

Maybe it’ll be that disc that just about everyone has with their first UHD player. Like the Matrix was for a lot of people’s DVD players.

That’s the power of a system seller.

I have absolutely no doubts. I’ve seen my share of “how did Lucas mess this up?”, but every time I watch one of your clips, I am amazed at just how botched the BluRays really are.

To be fair to Lucasfilm, what they gave us was decent enough for 2004 standards, and was only intended to be for DVD. The fact they couldn’t be bothered to do a proper restoration for HD is where the issue lies.

Yeah, I was the person who reached out and got stuck in the middle. I had just joined the team and had no idea any of this was happening. Mike had just done a late night video Q & A and had mentioned that he didn’t know what print -1 had but would like to know if it was something he could use. I reached out to him and gave him some sample frames. Mike immediately recognized the print (which astonished me at the time) as being the Spanish print he had already scanned. I asked for help with the Greedo scene and Mike very kindly provided us with the full scene in 4k - which I used in the final version. Mike also requested we send him Reel 1 of the Spanish Print again so that he could get it rescanned, and I passed on the request to -1 who told me “no way”, and went on to bash Mike in another thread here on OT. -1 Also refused to even acknowledge Mike’s contribution to the project - not even a “thank you” for the Greedo scene.

Yeah. The fact that their SilverScreen release doesn’t even thank people who contributed something speaks volumes. They put in a TN1 intro - that’s fine - but without any “thanks to all who contributed” or “thanks to - Mike, Harmy, Poita, etc, and everyone else who contributed but wishes to remain unnamed”.

Also, I’m going to shoot you a PM - it’s about something you are probably already aware of, but won’t hurt to double-check. 😃

You must have a different 2004 DVD than I do, because what I have was unnecessary and unforgivable for any era, and most of it still rippled into the Blu-Ray even now.

I want to thank you personally Mike, for spending so much of your time and money on this project. We can only imagine what has gone into this project. The video clips I have seen of your work, have simply astonished me. The tiniest imperfections that will go by inside of a second on screen, have been given the most scrupulous attention to detail, and then some.

However, I have a question … what if the powers that be at Disney and FOX, say NO, we aren’t interested? What will happen to this masterpiece? Will it ever come to be seen by anyone but you…and maybe your close friends? Will you release it a little bit at a time Mike, or what? I hate to think of it…but I had to ask.

I’ve got to believe Disney will acquire this from you after hearing, and seeing what has gone into this, and I believe they’ll employ you to complete ESB and ROTJ as well, and perhaps even other projects in the future, if you and they come to an agreement.

Regardless of what happens, Thank you for the 15+ years, you have put into this. From what I have seen of it, it is truly amazing!

Though the statement that this is theatrical re-release ready makes me hope for the bigger and better options that are possible, ala the big post above on UHD BR

Right on Mike.

Hope things turn out well with the studio execs. Even if they don’t, it’s comforting to know that there’s a pristine restoration of this film out there somewhere.

One a side note, if this pitch goes well & Mike gets a job, could he realistically be able to do Empire and Jedi in about a year (for the 40th anniversary) while working full time? It doesn’t seem likely that two movies could be done that quickly when the first one took 15 years.

Yeah, it’s been a long, long road, but at this point, it’s a fully-armed and operational battle station.

Could probably do a film in a year with a crew.

JEDIT 2: “Right now I feel like I can take on the whole Empire myself.”

I can’t agree with the “decent” part. I bought the DVDs in 2004 and I’ve seen them ONCE. My eyes and ears just couldn’t stand it. I mean I could live with the changes, I think they’re dumb and unnecessary but I can watch them, but I just couldn’t get through the horrible colours and mainly the constant “colour shifts” - if I remember correctly in the Tantive IV sequence the rebel uniforms changed colours in each shot. And also the sound mix was simply horrible, it sounded like it was done by some software which chose compeletely random takes and joined them together without any attempt to make them match (“Would you like another target, a military target? Then name the system !”)

Did it look worse than the original Blade Runner DVD (before the 2006 restoration)?

Well if I’m not mistaken, part of the reason it took 15 years was gathering funds, developing tools, and finding prints/arranging for them to be scanned.

And doing it for the most part all by himself. If he would be given a team, things might move a lot quicker.

The 2004 DVDs are what gave birth to the DELIBERATE CREATIVE DECISION meme. Lucasfilm tried to claim that all the fuck-ups were deliberate creative decisions, which in some ways just made it worse.

How can THIS be classed as a “deliberate creative decision”?

I’m having trouble finding it. Is the clearly visible tail the one from '97?
