Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI - Grindhouse 35mm LPP (Released) — Page 2

I’m sorry - Poita provided the print through an undisclosed source and I can’t tell you how or where it was scanned. It was done on a top-tier scanner though.

How is the 2.0 audio sourced? This looks fantastic by the way. The final, cleaned-up version of this will be my preferred version of Jedi.

The audio is the same as in Despecialized - LD audio with bugs fixed by hairy_hen.

Is anyone working on a cleaned up version of ESB or ROTJ?

Well, sure, Team Negative 1 are working on those but it’s probably gonna take quite a while.

This looks absolutely amazing! Thanks so much for your efforts on this Harmy, and those responsible for the scanning. All three films now out on 35mm scans… truly a dream come true! I love the Grindhouse vibe too - Takes me back to a more analogue age! 😃

Hi guys. I need advice setting up my home theater sound. Are there any audio enthusiasts here, who could help? Thread here.

The DTS and DD tracks are the same. Missing frames were filled with black.

I guess my first step, for my attempt to run some automated cleanup (as I did with TN1’s releases) is to try to find these padding frames so I can remove them =p, since GOUT-compatibility doesn’t matter to me. But I guess my initial calculations were wrong, because I figured I’d see a cigarette burn and some padding around 22 min. in, and I didn’t spot either - then again, it takes forever to seek around a video like this (just the nature of the material).

Looks like working around the film damage’s gonna be a little trickier than I thought. --;

Still… This is certainly a lot more than anyone could have hoped for.

(Now on to knock on wood and hope for 97 scans to go along with the OTVs, because I’m on a mission lol)

Holy shwoop, how the hell did this release pass me by so completely unnoticed?

I already saw the despecialized version but I know what I’m gonna watch tonight!

Thanks to Harmy and everyone involved! You guys are GODS.

BTW any chance of getting the 35mm audio as well in the foreseeable future? I loved the way it sounded on TN1’s ESB grindhouse. A bit raw, dirty and distorted, like the film itself. 😉

I’m so glad to see this, I was working on it as well before everything evaporated.
Yes, this print, and a lot of the other LPPs of Jedi had a very blue cast to much of the Endor scenes, and was painfully dark in the Jabba scenes, so it is a lot of work to colour correct.

A lot of people would have had a sub-par theatrical experience with Jedi at the time, as LPP prints were pumped out quickly, and wih not a lot of care from what I have seen.

Wow. What a treat! For example the insides of Jabba’s palace is full of detail I never knew existed. Thanks Harmy and Poita.

I would like to know more about the scanning process. Where did the film come from? Who scanned it?
Was this scanned with a setup similar to what Team Negative 1 uses or something completely different?
It’s all very interesting.

All that can be said re the scanning is what Harmy has already mentioned, it is done on pretty much the best dedicated film scanner out there, not the camera-pointing-at-a-projector-gate setup that Team-1 used, so yes, it is completely different, and it won’t get any better than this (as far as a raw scan goes) for this particular print. As for file details, the initial scan was 23TB in size, was captured to a 16bpp uncompressed image sequence, with an infrared damage matte in the alpha-channel.

There are some better prints out there, that I would like to run through the same scanner, they are available but time, hard drives and stuff are in the way somewhat.

Harmy did a great job, it would have been a ton of work just to get the colour looking so lovely.

Thanks for this you guys, this is a great watch.
Watched it on the projector in full hd last night and was blown away by the detail. The colours look great, really has that film feel.
Anymore to come from this great scanner?

I think TN1 has a rescan of the ANH LPP done on this equipment, not sure if they’re using it for anything?

This is so exciting. Thanks so much Harmy and Poita! Great to see a collab between you too!
Big fan of the ESB Grindhouse, hopefully there’ll be a SW one too at some point to complete the set.
If anyone has any mySpleen invites they don’t know what to do with, I’ll be your friend for life! 😉

Yes, I second that request for the 35mm audio, if possible. The actual film audio imperfections add to the experience, especially around reel changes. Funny how we now crave what we used to wish we could get rid of😃

Bits of blackness between reels are not mysterious mysteries.

These are the intra-reel black bits I’ve found:
55574
57200
104772
111564
172615

Non-black frame 104776 should’ve been 104772 methinks,
with four black frames after it, rather than before it.

You’ve redeemed yourself with “mysterious mysteries”.

Wasn’t that the nickname for the EditDroid ANH?

This looks awesome! I don’t have a myspleen account - is this up on usenet somewhere? Not finding it in starwars…

Thanks!
